Before that, seas of ice came and went like long winters. This one spot on Earth had been on the bottom of the ocean, the top of mountains, part of a sea of molten magma. Death cycled back again and again, an unavoidable force. As much a part of life as birth. Death was the one experience every living thing ever has in common. It clears the way for new life and experience to emerge. A catalyst for new beginnings.

I leaned in and kissed him again, ruffling his hair with my fingers as I did. “To infinity and beyond?” I asked with a grin so wide I thought my face was going to break. Marc tousled my hair back. “To infinity and beyond,” he replied. “But you gotta stop messing up my hair!” “I’m sorry I misjudged you in the beginning,” I confessed. “I don’t remember the last time I was this happy and I have you to thank for that. I just…you know, you do a really good job of hiding who you really are from most people. I’m just not sure why. I like this guy way more than the one you pretend to be.” “Like? You like this guy? What happened to love?” he teased as he reached for my laptop. “Got any good songs on here?” “Eh, I don’t know. Before I commit to that love thing I’m gonna need to see what you pick out. I might have to take it back. Choose wisely.” Marc scrolled through my iTunes, commenting here and there on the eclectic mix ranging from gangster rap to Beethoven. “I like options,” I shrugged.

Annora’s first time in the training area of the compound—
A man gives instructions to a young girl sprawled on her back, her feet swept out from under her, lungs fighting for air. I grimace, watching it unfold, knowing it could just as easily be me. I square my shoulders like I belong here, but my fingers twitch at my sides. The instructor seems familiar, like I’ve heard his voice in a dream, but I can’t place him. He calls out to Fynn, who gives me a reassuring smile before jogging over to the mat—taking up a position against another boy about his height and mass. The crowd around them shouts and cheers as they begin. I force myself to watch, even when Fynn takes a blow to his side, bending over for a brief second to breathe through the pain before attacking again. “Don’t let the crowd scare you. They're just loud. The worst that happens is a bloody nose…or maybe your pride takes a hit.” I hadn’t even noticed Jackie’s presence, too caught up in worrying for Fynn. He kicks out, swiping the other guy’s legs out from under him before pinning him to the mat. The instructor pounds the mat three times, and the match is over. “Come on, then. You’ll warm up with me.” Following her over to an empty mat, I watch her pull her pitch-black mass of curls into a bun on top of her head. Jackie is lean, built for speed, but she has muscles in places I'm definitely lacking. I don’t even know how to start, so I mirror her stance as we meet in the middle of the mat. Fynn’s shaking hands with his opponent, but scans the room, gaze meeting mine. He nods, I think in encouragement, but I’m probably about to embarrass myself in front of all of these people. Who knows what kind of nickname they’ll give me. “Alright, new girl. Let’s see what you got.”

"Take care of him!" I say to Joy. I grab his shoulder and try to lift him to his feet, and Joy helps me. Together we get him onto her bed. I expect him to flatten out and stare at the ceiling, the way he so often does, but he curls up on his side instead. "I'll get him a cookie," she says. "I'll help!" But before I can follow her out of the room, he snakes his fingers into the sleeve of my shirt. It's such a me move that it breaks my heart. "Stay," he mumbles. I sit next to him and fold the comforter over him, hoping to stop his shivering. He buries his face into my leg, and then really does BEGIN to cry. Blake is the most sullen, sulky teenager in the world. He can brood on anything, play up any perceived injury as if the world was against him. But he doesn't cry. He hates pity and hates showing real emotion in front of people. The only time I've seen him cry since he inherited me was when he was trying to tie me back to him while I faded away. But I'm here, I'm here.

Part Two: A James Bigbridge In the beginning these hunts had been fun. Now, he was just bored. That was unusual. His favourite sport was hunting the greasy Narfian slug ships and now he had Infinus to do it in. She was fast, she was sleek, aerodynamic in a way that didn’t matter in space, but in starship racing circles was prized. Three hulls, deflector shields, missile launchers, torpedo tubes, forward and rear laser cannons that sent a thawp sound through the hull as they fired. In short, the Infinus was everything that the slug ships weren’t. He was watching the Alien vessel slop its way through the void ahead, it’s weird tail flicking back and forth as it tried to gain velocity. It was trying to go to UltraLight! With a blap, by which he obviously meant thwap of a cannon, it would never move again. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to fire. He propped an elbow on the arm rest of the luxurious blue tinged Narf leather chair, the memory foam cushioning the impact as he rested his chin on his hand. He grumbled, “This is too easy.” The gunnery officer whose name he’d never bothered and would never bother to learn the name of spoke out in an irritating grating wheeze, “Shall we destroy the scum sir

I wasn't as productive with personal art this year since I took on two massive freelance gigs that I've enjoyed, but have also eaten up most of my time.

On the plus side, I've done over 25 illos this year and feel stronger as an artist 💪 I can't wait to return with vigor!
