I swear my brain mockingly gives me my best ideas in the shower—no pens or paper in sight. An entire seamlessly hilarious conversation between characters. By the time I get out, I can recall approximately 50% of one line. Never mind that I’ve been staring at the same scene for the past 45 minutes. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Leave it to Aly to ruin a perfectly good moment. He hadn’t missed the flash of desire across Maggie’s face before that signature glare took up residence. Given a few more minutes, he might have been able to make his birthday wish come true, but now it would have to wait. Maggie had backpedaled faster than a rat up a drainpipe out of his arms, face turning the color of the tomatoes in the salad behind her. “Not at all, Aly,” Maggie hummed, a fake smile plastered on her face. “Just getting the cake ready.” Despite the mask, Will could still see her chest rapidly rising and falling, obviously just as affected as him by their close proximity. “Ah, is that what they’re calling it these days? Good to know.” Aly tapped her chin, giving them a thoughtful look. Will chuckled, but coughed, covering his mouth at the look on Maggie’s face. He shouldn’t be this turned on by that glare. Maybe it was the atmosphere—maybe he was just feeling entitled because it was his birthday—either way, he was going to kiss that woman tonight.

“Red”
The blood-red sun sinks toward the horizon, casting long shadows over the skeletons of the fallen structures. Rubble and crunched glass crackle under my boots as I follow them. Annora flicks the detector on, its pulse weak and twitching like a heartbeat. “No read,” she mutters. “This zone must be dry.” “Then we go deeper,” Fynn answers quietly, brushing soot from his jacket, scanning our surroundings. Annora continues to hover the detector over piles of debris, brows furrowed, eyes sharp and focused as we make our way down what would have been a main street. We’re in a residential area now, the silence of the detector, deafening. She’s scanning the houses, no doubt seeking a lost memory. I’d do anything to know which home was hers. Many of them are piles of ashes, memories and belongings blown around by the harsh winds, the smoke cleared long ago. My pinky nudges hers—a question as much as an attempt at comfort. Those blue eyes meet mine and widen, lips curving up in a shy smile. Fynn looks away, jaw clenched. The tension between us has increased exponentially since the kiss, not that I regret it. In her eyes I see my own emotions mirrored—heat. Hunger. The detector beeps. Once. Again—faster. We freeze. Fynn leans in. “Is that…”

“I guess we’ll find out. Wait, where are you going?” she called out after him, hands on her hips. “To shower, if that’s allowed. I smell like an airport. Why? Was that you asking to join?” Maggie fully blushed this time. And she never blushed. She tried to come up with some snarky retort—it usually didn’t take her this long to think of a zinger. How did she manage to get so tongue-tied around this infuriating man?! Finally, she puffed out her cheeks in annoyance. “You wish.” What?! Was she in middle school? Good grief. Will chuckled as he turned to enter the bathroom. “Hey, Christensen!” He froze, both hands on the doorway, eyebrows raised. “If you use all of the hot water, I’ll make sure you only have my delicious, fancy appetizers to eat while you’re here!” Will made a face that had her doubled over, laughing, before he shut the door. The lock clicked. Like she would just jump in the shower with her sworn enemy!? She heard the water start and forced herself into the kitchen. Distraction. Anything to keep her mind from wandering to the fact that a very muscular professor was currently very naked in her shower.

I will admit, watching Red stand up to her father, arguing for our safety is—well, she’s glorious, and viscous, and stunningly beautiful when she’s angry—her blue eyes fiery and wild. It’s like watching a flower bloom after a soft rain or a butterfly breaking out of its cocoon. I can see why Fynn fell for her. She’s always gorgeous, but when she’s angry like this—eyes blazing and sharped tongued, she’s breathtaking.

“Hey,” she squats down next to me, putting a hand on my shoulder. “You didn’t lose. You just don’t know how to fight yet.” “I’m so tired of feeling weak,” I whisper, just loud enough for her to hear. “Then get up. We’ve got work to do.” Gripping Jackie’s hand, she pulls me to my feet. We spend the rest of the session learning footwork and proper form. I’m relentless, but hit the ground harder every time. By the fifth fall, I’m a panting, sweaty mess, my hair matted to my forehead and shirt soaked through. I’ve always hated cardio. “You keep coming back up, so that’s something,” Jackie grips my sweaty hand, hauling me to my shaking feet. “See. You’re not weak, just new.” We’ve attracted a few bystanders by this time but no one teases or openly mocks me. Even though I’ve been down on the mat longer than I've managed to stay on my feet. Suddenly a slow clap sounds from the corner of the room near the entrance. General Kato. Heads turn as he makes his way toward us, arms folded, face unreadable. “Well looks like our little fireball still has some fire in her. Messy and reckless, but still gets up like she’s ready to tear apart the world. We can work with that.” His attention turns to the trainer. “Meet me in my office, Elias. I have an update.” My body stiffens—not sure if his tone means praise or mockery. He smiles then, turning on the heel of his boot and exits the room. Elias. The one who tried to grab me the day I was captured. Looks like I didn’t break his nose after all. That’s unfortunate. Fynn’s looking at me, a half-smile on his face, but I know him well enough to spot the worry in those deep blue eyes. “You did good, new girl. Let’s get you a shower. You stink.”

Will loathed airports. And there was only one thing he hated more than airports—flying. Some people take on a completely different personality in airports, and Will, well Will became “Travel Will.” Now “Travel Will” should not be confused with “Vacation Will” who was fun and carefree. No, “Travel Will” was all business, mixed with a high dose of anxiety, and sprinkled with unprovoked irritability. “Travel Will” had a resting heart rate over 100 bpm at all times, never left his gate, and constantly checked departure times. And when “Travel Will” flew with friends, he sucked all the vacation joy out of them like a black hole, which is why he frequently chose to fly alone (or not at all).
