Can you imagine someone telling you in 2014 that Facebook would be running ads on Reddit one day? Yes, for the platform Facebook, why, have you heard of it? Apparently t's a great way to reconnect with old friends.

A fun little treat of reading Money Stuff is that when reading the footnotes for one section you sometimes get a little preview of the general vibe of the next section.

I spent the majority of the summer watching the oldest team in the league establish early deficits, fight back to even the score and then immediately blow it due to their own ineptitude. Good news is they ended up winning the World Series. Bad news is I don't have a good Senate comp for Miguel Rojas

I think at some point you have to create some sort of independent compensation commission—ideally also in charge of civil servants' salaries too to spread the goodwill around—to avoid the optics of "politicians vote to pay selves more money."
ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up

MD Anderson does many many many great things and proud we are of all of them but their absolute insistence on crossing out the word "cancer" in everything their brand touches drives me up the wall. WHAT KIND OF CENTER IS IT THEN?

Me to the 3yo: are you being a crybaby?
3yo: no I'm not a baby, I'm a crying boy!

It warms my heart when I see writers I respect (in this case @matt-levine.bsky.social) agreeing with my stance that the inflexible "correct" rules for the interaction of quotation marks and terminal punctuation are dumb, wrong, and serve to obfuscate the intended inflection of a sentence.

In the 2 weeks after Mamdani won in June, 10k ppl signed up with @runforsomething.net to consider a run for local office - our biggest surge *ever*. Like it or not (& I do!!) he's shaping the future of the Democratic Party.

If you want something different, get other people to run.

Gotta give it to Disney really knowing what's best for me, instead of ruining my day (and probably my family's too) watching Miami piss away a potential playoff run AGAIN, I was able to catch a much-needed nap to the dulcet sound of WVU-UH.

This is so obviously dumb I think it could only be written about by someone who doesn't know their extended family. Like in a month I'll have dinner with ~50 (white rural VA) family members, most of whom I do actually know our technical relation, but my mom's cousin is still Aunt Carol.

I think any story about Trump's autocracy should be mostly about the people and institutions who failed to stop it. This guy isn't a political genius, everything else just happens to be rotten. 'Toddler Consolidates Power In Household' is a story about incompetent parents, not shrewd maneuvering

Any argument for the ghost runner based on some of the extra-long games this postseason has to contend with the fact that most of the extras have been absolutely lousy with baserunners, they just all get stranded.

Wouldn't it be amazing if they bring Kershaw in and he shoves, just absolutely redeems his entire postseason career? Walks off the mound to like the most massive standing ovation?

And then they send him out for one more inning?
