Two seventh-century people found with west African ancestry – a story of diversity and integration in early Anglo-Saxon society
We should not be surprised that there are west Africans in early medieval Britain, the clues were there.

These are some of the most extreme restrictions on immigration in years. We're told to see them as benign because they're less bad than Farage's far-right extremism. But they are still terrible.
Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

Welsh poll sees Plaid and Reform contesting a polarised electorate.

Reform is the leading party among the over 50s (half of whom are on the righ politically).

Plaid is resonating with the Welsh under 50 (where two-thirds vote for centre-left parties)

plenty of things going against the right globally: Bolsonaro's conviction in Brazil, the defeat of the right wing in Norway's election, the student strikes and Saba Saba protests in Kenya (brutal as the repression there was), the EU's von der Leyen pursuing sanctions and trade suspension for Israel

Gun violence is out of control. The victims of gun violence are Republicans, Democrats, independents, and kids, who have no political affiliation whatsoever.

We need to tone down the incendiary political rhetoric, for sure, but we also need to do something about guns.
The guns!

To potentially oversimplify this, but the number of people arrested at the Palestine Action protests exceeds the entire number of people, on average, attending the anti-asylum hotels protests, yet they are called "fringe" and those outside hotels are called the "voice of the people".

The employee asked the girl and her mother if they needed help shopping. That’s it. That’s all. The misinformation, the insinuations (because the facts are inconveniently benign) are EXACTLY what was done to lesbians in the 80s. This is the product of hate and fear, not reality.

Today, I’m supporting the nationwide day of action calling on the richest to #PAYUP.

Billionaire wealth has increased 1000% since the 1990s. There is no excuse to plunge thousands into poverty through cuts and underfunding.

The money is there - time to tax it fairly.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

How little time off and how constrained academic holidays are in higher education. Many academics work during their “holidays” to be able to do their jobs. Also, no undergraduates doesn’t mean uni work stops. We’re not just teachers.
How little authors are paid, given the enormous industries which could not exist without them.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

There's very little in my field that would shock anyone but something that has come up again and again in every job I've ever had: few things are as automated as you think. There's a human doing most of the work, you just don't see them
