Should we be Resisting or Embracing AI? with David Raho Europe in the Pub Monday 19th January 7:30pm Farm Road Sports & Social Club S2 2TP Organised by Languages & Cultures at Sheffield Hallam and the Association for Skeptical Enquiry From the glowing red eye of HAL 9000 to the chatbot currently sitting in your pocket, Artificial Intelligence has shifted from a sci-fi nightmare to a daily reality. But as the technology accelerates, so does the anxiety. In this talk, David cuts through the noise to ask the ultimate question: Should We Be Resisting or Embracing AI? Join us as we explore whether we should be barricading the doors against AI or inviting it in. David is a PhD researcher in Law and Criminology at Sheffield Hallam University, investigating the comparative adoption of AI in Probation and Rehabilitation across England and Wales, Brazil, and Japan. He combines this academic work with broad practical experience, working within Probation and more recently with the AI team at His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. He is both a Trustee and Fellow of the Probation Institute. Increasingly feeling this. And it's not only about using a 🤖to "do the reading for you" (as if). It's about citing the same way you make water available by opening a fire whose. Also, I love "slow research" as a response to this and other pressures, but research *is* slow. To each their own I guess.

I like reading. One of the reasons I entered this profession was because it allows me to read and call it work. When I hear about fellow academics’ optimised knowledge consumption workflows, it makes me feel a little sad.

Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in Medieval Studies to join our dynamic team within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Autumn 2026. As Lecturer in Medieval Studies you will contribute to the teaching of Medieval English literature and Medieval history across the Faculty, within our School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, and School of Historical Studies - this includes our BA English and BA History programmes, as well as postgraduate taught programmes in the two subject areas. This post is offered on a permanent contract at Birkbeck, full time 35 hours per week, with a salary of £44,247 rising to £60,858 per year. Teaching hours will vary from 6pm - 9pm, Monday to Friday. To be successful, you will bring research expertise in the literature, history and culture of the Late Medieval period (c.1300-1500), and demonstrate a capacity to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching, participate actively in curriculum development, supervise doctoral students, and help shape the intellectual life of our vibrant academic community.
