“For You, O Democracy”
 — Walt Whitman, from Leaves of Grass

“We
the People,”

the first words
of the US Constitution,

boldly declare
the power and sanctity
of democracy.

The Constitution
does not begin
“In the Name
of His Holiness,”
nor “His Highness,”
nor “The King,”
nor “The Dear Leader,”

the ADL doesn't want you to wear a mask because Israel is using facial recognition programs to identify and target protestors
The Anti-Defamation League is making a big last-minute push for an anti-masking law in New York under the woefully and historically misguided belief that the law will fight antisemitism. This email went out to the organization's mailing list this afternoon.

This is totally wrong. The truth is the opposite. We export about 20% of our crops.
Literally 80% of their crops used to be sold outside of the US

Can you imagine if 40% of the room at the State of the Union has their back to him? He would freak out. Channel the wild European Parliament clips we've all seen down the years. Stand up and refute his power.

This idea that the Dems should skip the State of the Union is really, really REALLY bad. We, the non-trumpers, need a physical, visual sign Dems are serious and hear us. Lack of attendance allows them, and us, to be ignored. Instead, they should attend, stand up, and turn their backs to him.

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell.

This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

The other sin here is thinking that these issues are separable in the first place. They aren't. These dots are not separate or even separable issues. Believing that you can parse anti-DEI from "RFK Jr. And Science" and "trans issues" as if they're not intimately linked is beyond foolish.
We can quibble about the placement of each item but the original sin here is the very existence of this graph. Why on earth would a news organization rank social issues like they're weapons in an RPG?
Of course the NYT sees the "DEI" stuff positively & is neutral on anti-trans discrimination

That reporter really looked at the president of a country being battered by an invading force and asked “but what was he wearing”

Like, I know so many editors and journalists and they’re so careful and thoughtful about their work. I’ve learned so much from them about using a public platform responsibly. And the NYT just straight up decided to make a power graph of which minorities and war victims are most important to them.

There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

A book recommendation thread for your Friday evening! These books are...hard. They ask things of you. They confront you. But they do so in a way that returns far more than what they take. They may take something outta ya, as they say, but you are more after reading them than you were before...

I don't mind being an inspiration to think before one posts. I try to do that myself. And while I can generally tell the difference between someone trying to make a joke and an intentional bot/troll/chud, it's always worth remembering that the failure mode of 'clever' is 'asshole.'
I see a post like this and immediately think of a snarky/sarcastic comment. Which I then do not actually write, because my brain goes „Should Scalzi block me for that? If yes, stop now.“

You should know that I blame you for that.

Lots of driving today. 3 times I idled next to a cybertruck in traffic. 3 times I played this as loud as I could. Just a small thing, but the drivers did not seem to like the song. Highly recommend :)
