In other words, the "we were always like that"-narrative is a form of normalization, just like "this is not who we are" is a form of denial.

Tbf, as was the case in Germany, one strategy to normalize fascism in hindsight (thereby exculpating those who helped it come to power) will be to re-read the history of the country through the lens of that moment. Everything leads to Hitler (except the bits that didn't, which we ignore).

If Democrats haven't announced their proposal for the Donald Trump No Guns in Public bill by the end of the day, they're missing an easy shot
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."

What reason is there to believe that, even if they were passed, the Trump administration would comply?

I will go further and say that people using the "r"-word are hoping that bringing it back opens the door to bringing back the "n"-word, and is strongly correlated with the people who want to carve off trans rights as a stepping stone to claw back gay rights in general
I assume anyone who says this word is probably okay with the n-word, too. Or, more charitably, doesn’t understand why they shouldn’t say it just that saying it would get them in a lot of trouble.

But so far, they've been coming up empty. It's why they're getting desperate, but they know they're coming up empty. I hope they continue to do so.
