Ever wondered what goes into writing a Penance RPG adaptation? For our next D&D5e adaptation, we will again be releasing an archival companion series. We are publicly releasing the Abyssal Archive that was previously available only to patrons.

No offence to anyone doing year end wraps or resolutions, but I'm not keen on any of those things.

A lot of good things happened to me and I'm starting the new year off with some good stuff on the docket.

Will I do better this year? Let's hope so.

“Thoughtful Critique“ is a journaling game for 3+ players using the printed draft of an incomplete TTRPG and colored pens.

Players take turns leaving notes in the game’s margins.

Kill Hitler in 6D6 Jumps.

You have invented time travel through Wikipedia pages using links. You're sending drones.

The tech isn't perfect. The best you can do is six d6 rolls to get to Hitler.

-Hit 'random article' on Wikipedia
-Roll 1d6
-hit link = number on die
-Least drones used wins

As a big hairy dude myself, I bristle at the breakdown of this. On a more positive note for any ttrpg designer, take heed:

1. Thesis statements are important 1st impressions.
2. Design is everything, everywhere, all the time.
3. Simple beats verbose.
4. Art is like spices, use tastefully.
Ok, this is @friede.bsky.social's fault. She raised the question of *how* people analyze RPG texts, and that is a BIG, HAIRY QUESTION, and it got me thinking.

I'm not ready to take a tilt at it yet, but that's because it turns out there are a lot of things I do *before* I read an RPG. A lot.

This is a great idea and I'm going to add to it by saying that I'm up for this.

If you want me to do art for your project on a royalty fee structure instead of a one time payment, I'm happy to help out.

We swim together.
In Tabletop Roleplaying Games the idea of royalties is still relatively new; more of us at the publishing level need to be thinking about ways to undermine the existing paradigm and build to sustain our comrades and collaborators in the long term and give them the fruits of their own labor
My wife had a single line in Kung Fu Panda 17 years ago and still gets checks every few months. Most are way smaller than this, but devs get $0 even though the games we work on will likely be sold for 10+ years soooo yeah.

As someone who properly got onto being a ttrpg designer in the pandemic, it was a pretty lonely world out there in India for it.

However many of my good friends from the bangalore tabletop group were instrumental in me keeping my sanity and drive going.

Many of these people are my IRL buds.

Regarding networking: I use the same principles I learned in the playground at school.

- making friends is ez. Just be kind and genuine.
- keeping friends is hard. You gotta check in with them. I still struggle with this (sorry mates)
- annoy the bullies. Do not back down.

This is one of the most important lesson for any kind of designer.
And for them, that idea of what games don and don’t support becomes even more
Important, because they are not designing to be better than D&D, but rather, they are designing in competition with the idea of no game at all.
