Kicking off 2026 by writing about one of the best books of 2025. Also Walter Benjamin, baroque art, Alejo Carpentier, etc etc. The New Weird is back, baby (the New Weird never left because it's a methodology, not a periodization)

There are countless fact-based critiques of food delivery apps, and tons of reporting about how poorly gig workers are treated. Which makes this whole thing weirder. Why did an anonymous Redditor go to such lengths to push a bunch of false, AI-generated allegations? And try to trick journalists too?
An AI-Generated Reddit Post Fooled the Internet. It Was Only Half of an Elaborate Scam.
I traded Signal messages with someone purporting to have serious dirt on Uber. They used AI to make the whole thing up.

I really like this approach to "right to reply" - media orgs shouldn't be giving oxygen to fires set by bigots.
We have published the following update to our article following an email response from the New York Times.

Trans News Network has a policy against platforming bigotry. As such, we have declined to publish the Times' statement which included blatant transphobia.
