missed the third anniversary of Mimi Parker’s death, which I’d meant to mark by posting my Low playlist that I made after I heard the news, but I will post it late, because Low makes me want to be late to things anyway

Every time this account posts a Kentucky town, I think: "This is the greatest thing I have ever seen."

That second picture is exactly what Kentucky looks like all the time, specifically the color and quality of the trees.

As someone who wore out his 4 track in the 90s, I can tell you the best sounding tapes were the cheapest ones you could find at the pharmacy within walking distance of your dorm room.
What actually was the difference?

Love lunch ladies.
My great-grandmother was a lunch lady in rural Georgia and was just as tough, resourceful, and caring as all of these wonderful ladies. Thank you for lifting them up, @bittersouth.bsky.social! 🥹 bittersoutherner.com/issue-no-12/...

my first in-depth encounter with NY’s music was a homemade mix cassette tape of acoustic songs that I found & bought at a thrift store; a lot of deep cuts on there. “Last Trip to Tulsa” included—it was unspeakably weird but great to encounter songs like that with little in the way of context.

Happy 80th birthday to Neil Young, an Olympian figure and the subject of some of the funniest quotes in BACKBEATS thanks to his tempestuous relationship with Kenny Buttrey.

“Neil hires some of the best musicians in the world and has 'em play as stupid as they possibly can.”

I received my first guitar for Christmas in 1989. The following summer I worked at the snack bar at the Country Club.

I was responsible for cooking meat, from a raw state, for consumption, but was never taught how to cook or given in instruction on safe handling of meat.

I once had a special show on WXYC dedicated to guitar solos and I played this in it entirety.

I received so many (angry) calls.
Always fun to remember that this is the only album that Neil Young has ever released on his birthday.

I feel like I'm always writing about Neil Young, possibly because he releases something new every three months. One of my favorite pieces of relatively recent vintage is my review of the Way Down in the Rust Bucket, a live album recorded shortly after Ragged Glory. pitchfork.com/reviews/albu...

Rock history in brief:

These Kentucky teens from the mid 80s not only went on to form Slint and Gastr Del Sol, pioneers of post-rock, but also gave us this, a post-hardcore anthem to rival Fugazi 'Waiting Room'

A pleasure of being a Neil Young fan for a long time is that you eventually get around to realizing he’s got great songs on just about every album and in every era.

In particular, I am a big “the 80s albums are good” guy. Landing on Water rips. Life is great!
I'm exhausted from just formatting this Neil Young tribute, so props to Ryan Leas for all his work tracking these stories down. It's another mammoth achievement and a fitting tribute to the GOAT.
