This image will always stick with me. (And the name…)

Did some calling around, and these are the theaters in greater L.A. where someone was able to confirm to me over the phone that they have 3D showings of A3 at the standard 24 frames per second.

(Didn't bother with the big chains—AMC, Cinemark, and Regal—so someone else can make that their project)

Apparently Big Jim issued a mandate this time around that theaters were not allowed to promote whether 3D screenings of AVATAR 3 were in high frame rate or not.

Harkins, it seems, told Jim to kick rocks and has HFR and non-HFR screenings clearly labeled on their website (though not on Fandango).

It's a perfect adaptation, and the 2 big subsequent ones fall flat because they ignore a critical bit of the book:

"The Grinch hated Christmas, the whole Christmas season.
Now please don't ask why, no one quote knows the reason."

AND THEY PROCEED TO ASK WHY.
The 1966 Grinch special is gorgeously animated, Directed by Chuck Jones and Ben Washam, and features the voices of Boris Karloff and Thurl Ravenscroft… if anything it’s underrated.

Thinking more about AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH after sleeping on it. I think its closest analog is maybe PIRATES: AT WORLD'S END. Both are slightly unwieldy and structurally awkward, but they're also deeply earnest and filled with the biggest fucking swings you've ever seen in a major blockbuster event.
December 19, 2025 at 4:44 PM
And now the hunt begins to find *any* theater in the greater Los Angeles area that is playing FIRE AND ASH in 3D at 24 frames.

I can get on Big Jim’s level with everything else, but this HFR shit (and especially the switching between 48 and 24 fps) sucks so much. Just let movies look like movies.

*A lot* of movie. Think I need a second viewing to sink into its rhythm, but either way the fastest 3 hour and 20 minute movie ever made and the weirdest shit you’ll ever see in a movie of this scale (at least until A4 comes out).

Jim, you absolute maniac, I see you.

Christopher Tolkien fought his whole life against the endless franchising of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, and the moment after he gasped his last breath, Amazon announced they were developing 26 spin-offs.

When Watterson croaks, any talk of a CALVIN & HOBBES movie should be seen as grave robbing.

STAR WARS (especially after EMPIRE) was never a straight forward power/wish fulfillment fantasy. It is something richer and more complex. Luke’s ultimate victory in RETURN OF THE JEDI is in casting aside his weapon. But then we got 25 years of wish fulfillment stories in the expanded universe.
The older I get, the more clearly I see that while “Master Luke Skywalker and his Order of Jedi superheroes” is perfectly fine for EU novels/comics/games at a time when Star Wars movies were “over,” it just isn’t an especially compelling hook for a movie.

Once you start down the duck path, forever will it dominate your destiny
NEW! Ducks! They first appeared (twice) in the original novelization of Star Wars and have been floating around ever since … but why are there ducks in the galaxy far far away? And what about horses? Or ravens? Or rats? Listen to this very important episode today! Links ⬇️

STAR WARS created a storytelling space of boundless possibility. Every subsequent movie narrowed the focus and boxed in that potential. THE LAST JEDI kicked down those walls and opened up the series' possibility for the first time in 40 years. Whatever came after, I'll always love it for that.
STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI was released on this day 8 years ago

There are a lot of Christmas movies I like, but at this point I’ve pretty much whittled down my ‘essentials’ list to just IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and the 1999 Patrick Stewart CHRISTMAS CAROL.
What holiday movie do you rewatch every year? 🎄

Wake Up Dead Man is streaming so I can express more specific thoughts without feeling guilty: there's a Phone Call Scene that starts out as a pretty straightforward frustrating customer-service call, evolves into something transcendent. beautifully acted, almost unbearably lovely. fucked me up bad.
had high hopes for Wake Up Dead Man, and they were exceeded. I feel insanely biased, though, as a lapsed Catholic who loves impeccably crafted locked-room mysteries & murder at the vicarage. imho the funniest, most poignant, and maybe prettiest Benoit Blanc entry yet.

I remember doing the deal for Epic Mickey, and Bob Iger shooting laser beams out his eyes at me in the Disney dining room. “Don’t let this video game fuck up Mickey.”

Oh well. That’s over.
BREAKING: Disney is making a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, and will allow its iconic characters to be on the company's Sora AI video generator.
December 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
The thing that genuinely baffles me about the Disney/OpenAI deal is—all other issues aside—Disney giving away their most valuable IP and not only not getting paid, but losing a billion dollars on the deal is insane. I know CEOs always fail upwards, but how is this not a career ending move for Iger?

Getting in just under the wire, ELLA MCCAY is the worst movie I’ve seen this year by a pretty wide margin. People generally say this sort of jokingly, but I sincerely would not be surprised if it turns out Brooks used an LLM as a “writing tool” on this.
December 12, 2025 at 5:25 AM
Has Iger made *any* good decisions since returning to Disney? You’ll hear no Chapek apologia from me, but the promise of Iger coming back to set things right sure turned sour in a hurry.
