Older but not necessarily wiser.
Phil Thompson nearly ran me over and Sammy Lee told me I look like Eric Clapton. Not sure which was worse.
Once complimented on my beard by Jeremy Corbyn.
Would put cauliflower and Mick Hucknall into Room 101.

Right. Not going put a target on it - no 'one per day' or, God forbid, 500 during the year (follow @carrythegary.bsky.social to see how he gets on with that) - but I did enjoy the album thing in 2025, listened to some great stuff through it and it sounds like a few other folks did as well...
First game in just under 2 months for my U15s this morning.
3-1 up. Went 3-4 down in the last minute. Went straight down the other end and equalised, then nearly won it in added time.
Could feel more of my hair going grey as it went on.
It's no wonder Slot's got none left.

What Europe could do is threaten to boycott the World Cup. It won't. But that might actually work. Trump wants his big show.

If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

A friend of my parents, who has known my dad since 1969, sent me an email after reading my book 21st-Century Yokel, which has quite a bit about my dad in it. "It's good that you tone your dad down when you are writing about him," she said. "Because if you didn't, nobody would believe he was real."

Nigel Farage has been out today defending a platform that creates child sex abuse images and harasses women. Remember this the next time he says his anti immigrant rhetoric is motivated by concern for women and children.

To a lot of people the statemrnt "Grok creates CSAM" will read as a "tech headline" they bypass.

"Grok creates child porn" is a much more visceral statement that will grab someone's attention and THEN you can explain why we don't use that term anymore.

So one thing wrt the Grok/CSAM issue.
When talking about it with "not very online" people consider using the outdated term "child porn." At least initially.
Lots of people don't know what "CSAM" means and you need to make it clear that it's child porn to them at the outset.

We don’t have a problem with immigration in this country. We have a problem with racists.

Not saying we're watching 'This Is Us' slowly, but we've been plodding through it for what seems like forever and we're not even done with season 3.
There's a very real chance that the entire timeframe of the series from beginning to end will be shorter than the time it takes us to get through it.

I thought it might be nice to give away my last 2 signed hardbacks of my novel 1983, with two lovely linocut hares by my mum.

All you have to do to enter is repost this (& leave a reply).

The book's been called "Stranger Things rewritten by Kurt Vonnegut and Sue Townsend”.
Extract in the replies.

removal from app store + google play probably fatally wounds the entire global right wing movement and significantly hinders musk’s own ability to get involved with elections both here and abroad
Honestly think that if you pulled twitter from the App Store and shut it down it would fuck up the entire right wing ecosystem at that point. Like the entire media apparatus would fall apart.

one takeaway from the grok noncon porn thing is that much of the media just isn't interested in an issue they can't pretend has two sides or that doesn't give them an opportunity to shit on the left. Also it would be uncomfortable to justify remaining on twitter after acknowledging it

First snowy game I ever went to. Freezing on the Kop, vouchers given out on the gate in case it got called off. As it says - very cold, but very enjoyable.
4 January 1986:
Liverpool FC beat Norwich City 5-0 in a FA Cup 3rd round game at Anfield. Kevin MacDonald, Paul Walsh, Steve McMahon, Ronnie Whelan and John Wark entered the scoresheet. A cold but enjoyable evening for the Reds.

Emma Paton referencing 'maiden' and 'almighty' there, after noting Ryan Searle's 'Heavy Metal' nickname. I'd love to think that was deliberate.

My almost 74 year old dad has just sent me a video of him and a couple of his similarly aged mates paddling in the north sea yesterday morning. I'm not sure whether I should be congratulating them or calling the police.

So that was 2025.
Some good bits, some shit bits.
Up to us all to make sure 2026 has more of the former and not so many of the latter.
Have a good one, peeps.

My reading fell off a cliff this year because I spent all my spare time doing the albums thing, but even in probably my most unproductive reading year *ever*, I read more than that.
NEW: How many books did you read this year? If it was more than 2, congrats: you read more than the median American.

Read on for way more @today.yougov.com polling from me on America's book-reading habits in 2025. 1/
