“People [in tech jobs] worry that not being seen as uncritical AI cheerleaders will be a career-limiting move…for those who aren't insiders in the tech industry, it's vital that you understand that you've been presented with an extremely distorted view about what tech workers really think about AI”
Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense. anildash.com/2025/10/17/t... Please share!

Look, if we're getting rid of the First Amendment, apparently we're getting rid of all of it...

(the proper response from journalists here is "fuck no" and if you lose your press pass, so fucking be it, and start working on building up your sources inside the pentagon to continue your reporting)
NEW: The Pentagon told journalists it will require them to pledge they won’t gather any information — even unclassified — that hasn’t been expressly authorized for release, and will revoke the press credentials of those who do not obey. @washingtonpost.com
Pentagon demands journalists pledge to not obtain unauthorized material
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is imposing strict new rules that would severely limit the ability of journalists to report on the Pentagon.

I finally read computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum’s 1976 classic “Computer Power and Human Reason.”

This book deserves a massive revival in our current age of grotesque and largely thoughtless AI creep into everything:

Just to state this plainly:

If you are an opponent of the regime, you will be investigated, harassed, potentially kidnapped, and imprisoned.

And if you are a previously-convicted supporter of the regime, you will be released from prison.
Do you know how insane and infuriating it is to live in a country where one party claims, with media and public support, the mantle of being the ‘tough on crime’ party while its leader openly calls for convicted criminals to be released from prison ‘or else’?

Five-ish years ago, @lizthegrey.com told me tech workers needed to organize because the tech giants would automate their jobs, the market would flood with talent and they would lose bargaining power. I thought it was unlikely. Here’s a story about me being wrong. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/04/t...

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

There is increasingly strong evidence that multiple people sent to El Salvador to be imprisoned at US taxpayer expense were completely innocent; not members of any gang and not even people who had committed a crime in the US or Venezuela.

This is why due process must be upheld.
This will be in tomorrow's Border Update but deserves its own separate post:

Profiles of 15 young Venezuelan men shipped off to El Salvador's prisons last Saturday. None of them seem to be gang members—not at all.
