Just because someone is in a position of power does not make them smarter than even the average person. It does not bestow a magical anointing on them that makes all their thoughts holy and just.

It just makes them powerful.
Plus, publications themselves are now run by callous editors and publishers (often from England inexplicably) who do not invest in reporter development and are fine with waves of devastating layoffs. I have friends who were recently fired by Emma Tucker of the Wall Street Journal for no reason

NEW:

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

Standing up to corruption and gross abuse of power is painful. It has always required and will continue to require sacrifice.

It’s hard. But if we don’t make the hard decisions now, things will continue getting worse until they’re nearly insurmountable.
It’s an honor for GW to be on this list of schools to be banned from State Dept programs for having decent hiring and ethical practices. Hope it stays that way. Complying with Trump’s bigoted demands and open racism is shameful.

May we learn from this that someone being rich does not make them smarter, or more noble, or wiser than any one of us.

It just means they have more money.
So help me understand this again:

There’s OTHER stuff that they don’t want us to see? Stuff other THAN THIS STUFF?!?!?!

New from me in @newrepublic.com: “Primary Every Democrat.”

If the current crop cannot demonstrate they care more about democracy than enjoying three-day weekends, we should flood the zone and challenge them all.
Primary Every Democrat
It’s exhausting to watch poll-tested, donor-beholden congressional Democrats continue to be too old, too cloistered, and too bumbling to do anything as the government burns.

I agree with the intent of this post but think it’s too limited. ALL Dem Senators sold us out, by keeping Schumer as leader. Schumer orchestrated this deal. The Senators worked together to select people whose elections were furthest away or who are retiring.

This was a group project.
Never forget who sold us out:

Hassan
King
Cortez-Masto
Shaheen
Kaine
Fetterman
Durbin
Rosen

look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry

The only action I can imagine possibly helping is to call ALL Dem senators and let them know not another dime in donations or another vote for them unless they vote to oust Schumer as leader.
Blame *all* Democratic incumbents for this surrender. Not just the ones voting for it. The others could have voted to remove Schumer long ago and install a leader capable of formulating a strategy and holding his people together. They were content to stay with a proven loser.
I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable.

We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina.

A vote for this bill is a mistake.

I have been talking to a lot of voters these past few weeks, and a pretty high percentage of them:
- are registered Dems but eager to change to Independent
- used to be a Dem, are now Independent, and don’t see themselves ever being a Dem again

And this kind of weak nonsense is why.
Chris Murphy: "There will be pretty substantial damage to a Dem brand that has been rehabilitated if on the heels of an election in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop... if we surrender without having gotten anything, I worry it'll be hard to get them back up off the mat"

The caucus meeting was just to orchestrate who would fall on the sword but not be up for a vote in 2026.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

We definitely deserve better than someone who votes for Trump’s nominees and got his start in the Senate as a fall guy.
2. Chris Coons. This guy sucks! This guy has always sucked! Wanted to go home for valentine's day rather than call witnesses after J6. Delaware is incredibly safe and deserves better. Easy primary.

3. Dick Durbin. Retiring. Still want to primary him just out of general principle.

I'm doing the thing I hate which is to suggest something that I can't take on myself but I would absolutely amplify, make calls and donate.
It would help to have a National Day of Action re: SNAP - perhaps on November 1. It would take rapid response but houses of worship could take the lead in mobilizing their members. Educate everyone about the cuts, encourage local donations, pressure Congress, etc...

The NYT does not believe in covering the views of the people, just their elite friends:
It's less than 24 hours after 5-8 million Americans marched against a president who called them domestic terrorists, and there is zero reference to it on the current NYT home page, except for a Bouie op/ed that came out several days earlier.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Folks fleeing to Canada to escape persecution in Delaware is one of the oldest stories in First State.

And the wickedness of that tradition isn’t any less rotten for being recreated anew in this generation.
Delaware Haitians flee to Canada as temporary protections end
With the U.S. government’s hostility toward Haitian immigrants on the rise, many have moved to Canada, leaving behind communities in central Delaware.
