I didn't bother reading it (thank you for doing the unpleasant work, Kate!) but what bothers me most about this, I think, is the smug implication by the 'writer' that her time is so much more important than the reader's. "I use AI because I have better things to do than write for you!"
If you're wondering whether the "open letter about AI" on file 770 is worth reading and engaging, it is not. The whole thing is rhetorical mush so it was no surprise when I got to the end and she admitted "her" letter was itself written by AI. Useless bait.

Chuck Wendig continues to be 100% correct about this and breaks down That Post beautifully.
Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

Bonus: picture of my "cat," sweet baby Boomba.

Published a novel and a short story, reprinted a few more short stories, put out 12 podcast episodes, 12 newsletters, and started the third novel. Learned how to 3D print and laser cut. Increased my step count to around 14K a day. Started a new job. Didn't die.
Quote this with what you accomplished in 2025.

Finished editing/published a novel and a novella. Wrote 2 full (non-first) drafts of another novel and finished the first draft of a 3rd.

Published 7 podcast eps. Painted a lot. Cried a lot, slept a little. Ran 1900+ mi. Best of times, worst of, etc.
Quote this with what you accomplished in 2025 no matter how small or big.

Finished writing a new newsletter goodie novella.

Played piano in front of an audience for the first time in 30 years. Did not die; did not keel over; did not burst into tears.

Played in several Zoom concerts.

Incredible to see that after all the moralizing debates about piracy we had for 30+ years we're so suddenly at "this must happen 24/7/365 and we will make you use it."

No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.

I find the idea that you need to know “how to use” AI tools really funny, as if it isn’t incredibly easy to type in prompts and the marketing these tools is that literally anyone can do it

Oh did they do that thing where they're just another layer in the PDF.

Only a matter of time until a UC Berkeley law professor writes a memo justifying torture, a brave Vanity Fair writer gets tortured to say whether it hurts, and we have a national discussion about whether certain people should be tortured for our safety.

Subscribing is AUD30/yr and it gets you two 6-monthly ebooks (like this),

or you can buy the ebook (AUD20) or paperback (AUD35, inc shipping).

The other factor is that you can't assign homework anymore. We were able to read multiple assigned books when I was in high school because the assumption was you'd take them home and read them. For reasons, some legitimate and others not so much, you can't do that anymore.
