I've been trying to figure out the right way to paraphrase that Santayana line about history in order to fit our current moment. Here's what I've got:

Fascists lie about history because they want to repeat it.

Hello, I am a creative writing professor in a film. I am in my 50s, yet sleeping with my female students in their 20s. I still have a full head of hair, but haven't written anything of merit for 20 years. I've a drinking problem, am grouchy yet loveable, and will be redeemed by the end of the movie.

Hello, I am a law professor in a film. My office is the size of a ballroom, panelled in ancient oak. My desk is teak, with a leather top, and has no technology of any sort on it. I wear only tweed, and have a secretary called Margaret.
Hello, I am a scientist in a film. All my liquids are brightly coloured. The time it takes to perform tests and experiments is dependent on plot requirements, not biology or chemistry. Also, my safety glasses are extremely stylish.
Hello. I am an expendable character in an action film. If you shoot me with a regular gun I will scream in pain before I die. But if you shoot me with a silencer I will - obligingly - just let out a quiet gasp.

The new Superman film is a lot of fun: bright colours, sincerity, a fair bit of silliness. This is objectively the correct vibe for a Superman film, and I'm happy we finally found our way back there.

In “Superman Smashes the Klan,” Superman is obviously anti-Klan. But according to scholar Chris Gavaler, the popular mythologization of the Klan is tied to the birth of the superhero in ways that might affect our understanding of Superman’s approach to justice. 1/12 #Superman

In advocating for inclusivity, “Superman Smashes the Klan” draws (quite literally) on an internationally-inflected style that brings manga, Max Fleischer, and DC house style together to create a charming mosaic that advances the themes and meanings of the story. #Superman 1/12

This is such a little thing, but I was so glad that Superman didn't have Budweiser product placement. Both Man of Steel and Superman Returns show Clark drinking a Budweiser and I just think he'd have better taste than that.

I hate calling movies "important," but SINNERS and SUPERMAN are vital works of mainstream art at a moment when we're about to lose our country (if we haven't already). Coogler and Gunn are appealing to our better angels (in very different ways), and targeting obvious villains. Now or never, folks.
Just saw Superman. Was gonna do a whole bit about it walking in. That’d be a disservice. It’s an important piece of work and I’m not joking. I don’t even like superhero movies. Sprint to see it. Bring your kids and explain it to them. James Gunn had a time machine when he made it.

Definitely the best live action DC movie in a long time, and easily one of the best Superman movies since the 1978 one.

Granted, neither of those are high bars, but this movie was way better than I thought it was going to be.

Superman is the story of a man who gets cancelled because his parents are creepy patriarchal racist eugenicists and decides to make up for it by trying to be a better person rather than doubling down on it and bemoaning the excesses of cancel culture--no wonder the online right hates it so much.

It’s a shame Dean Cain turned into another Trump as* licker, I genuinely loved how he played Clark/Superman on “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”.
You’d think a guy who played the character for several seasons of a TV show would have a better understanding of the character.

Even though it openly borrows some of the iconography and the theme I enjoyed that Superman was the first Superman movie since Superman 1978 that didn't feel like it was just a sequel or a remake of it.

We saw Superman yesterday. Really enjoyable movie.

While it does a few things better, doesn’t really surpass the original Donner film. Maybe close to on the same level.
