How to make pancakes the british way:
Step 1: remember it's pancake day
Step 2: work all day because you are a cog in the capitalism nightmare machine
Step 3: Too tired to make pancakes
Step 4: no pancakes for you

I'm back to doing work on SimpleRSS.dev! I've decided it's time to clean this thing up and get it out of alpha (and thus no longer locked behind a password). Here are the current patch notes. More to come in the next few days!

It's not a coincidence that the era of American prosperity people look back on most fondly, the whole "you could buy a house and a car and raise a family on one income" thing, coincides exactly with the most regulation on business and the strongest income equality in the country's history.
For 50 years, the median wage of hourly workers stagnated or declined while the stock market and CEO pay skyrocketed.

Is it any wonder why so many feel abandoned by the system? People lose faith, and a demagogue fills the void.

This is why we must fix the system. AOC is right.
AOC: "Extreme level of wealth inequality leads to social instability and drives authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and really dangerous domestic internal politics. That is a direct outcome of the failure of democracies over decades to deliver."

Wealth inequality has set the stage for our current political condition. The billionaires stay in power by dividing the groups who might otherwise unite and oust them from power. The race baiting, xenophobia, homophobia, and faux religious pandering is all part of the strategy. We shall overcome.

I thing I don't love is how so much stuff just comes with a QR code. Not even a URL. Meaning I have to use my tiny phone with its tiny screen instead of my nice 34" monitor.

Looking at stuff on the phone sucks. Why don't people realize it sucks? It's a necessary evil and shouldn't be the default.

Oh no. What will America do without a department that's accomplished nothing beyond terrorizing its own people in the 25 years since it was created?

Everyone has their Oscars windmill to tilt at, and mine will forever be Lupita Nyong'o not even getting *nominated* for Us, a performance for which she should have won the whole thing.

Nothing against Renee Zellweger but come the fuck on.

It’s not like study after study has shown this for decades, there, Anderson
Anderson Cooper: “So it's more expensive to have a chronically homeless person living on the streets than it is to actually subsidize an apartment for them?”

Answer: “Yes, we’re paying more as taxpayers to walk past that person on the street and do nothing…” #HousingFirst

I think one of the reasons I've struggled to get back to drawing regularly is, you know that chart where it's like "you reach a level where you can't see your art is bad, for a while, over and over?" I never reach that level. I've spent too much of my life looking at REALLY GOOD art.

Stock images look like AI in part because AI is trained on stock images, and in part because a stock image is trying to be as generic as possible. And AI is a statistics machine, and will also produce incredibly generic images

I can't imagine anyone else running who I'd be more likely to vote for than AOC. I don't actually think she'll clear the primary but I don't care. If she wants to run, she should run. I am, as always, gonna vote for who inspires me, not who I think is safe. People doing the latter has NOT HELPED.
Anyone who wants to handwring about AOC--a popular, proven politician who ain't perfect but is close to as Left as Democrats get--as a possible presidential candidate when motherfuckers are out here trumpeting the worst centrist white men alive left and right as The Realistic Choice can sit and spin

All told I had 106 applicants for the cover illustration for my novel Possessed (not including about a dozen obvious bots and fakers). That means I have to turn down 105 people, many of them absolutely *amazing* artists. It's a good problem to have but man, it's agonizing. 🫠

To the best of my knowledge, I have replied to every single email submission as of now (Thu Feb 12, 13:58 CET). If you sent me an email and did not receive a response, please resend.

I'll do my best to respond to DMs, now, even though I asked for no DMs. 😉

This is absolutely INFURIATING because it is so relentless, and yet it's still... it's still KIND of funny because honestly who is out there trying to get money from WRITERS, that's like holding a cup underneath a Bigmouth Billy Bass and hoping for caviar to come out
The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1

How to know you've been together for (very nearly) 20 years - you learn that she's bought new bras because she forwarded you the receipt so you'd know what the charge was the next time you do the budget.

A lot of things wrong with this, specifically the assertion in the next post that it failed because 'the tech wasn't there to make it happen' - it very much was, the problem is that it was completely financially unworkable, and the only reason that changed was ZIRP and infinite loss as a model
I just think it’s very clearly getting much better quite quickly. But yes the timelines are probably going to be longer. Here’s a useful example. Kozmo dot com was a quintessential tech bubble company in early sights that didn’t pan out. Promised 1 hr delivery of whatever you needed.

Fun fact: due to random shuffle, the second song that played at my wedding was "Nugget" from this album - the song whose chorus repeatedly shouts "shut the fuck up!"

My mom was ... confused.

(The first song was "Rock You Like a Hurricane" because both Charlotte and I think it's hilarious)
Fashion Nugget (1996) - Cake. A good friend of mine hates this band. I can see why, but they work for me. They can get a little goofy at times, but they understand what makes a song catchy. That said, their next album is much better. After that, it all gets a little same-y to me.
