Students & researchers have a tough time keeping the names of Roman emperors and elites straight. But we do have a database to help name and number each. It is called the Prospographia Imperii Romani (=PIR) and has 15061 persons, of which 1932 are women. Please use the database! pir.bbaw.de#/search

History has taught us that this is precisely when Donald Trump is most dangerous — and when Republicans turn to voter suppression, election subversion and worse. With the 2026 midterm elections less than a year away, Trump is already plotting his next moves.

Here’s what we all need to prepare for.

Ontario’s government is nakedly corrupt, and working aggressively to defund and destroy the twin pillars of public health care and public education that sustain Canadian civil society. We must not allow these national treasures to be degraded like this. Where is the credible opposition?! #onpoli

Modernists: I’m looking to find more secondary scholarship about the bombing of southern Italy—particularly Naples—in 1943/1944 to get a better appreciation of how those events shaped cultural heritage (archives lost, art destroyed, etc). Any ideas?

Every school and college that cheerfully mainlines Open AI chatbots into their students' devices and browsers and brains through MS or other platforms, really should be planning for some tough legal battles in the years ahead. It's going to get so much worse. But they could just stop doing it now.
1.This is not the only known example we know of ChatGPT cheering on a vulnerable young person to die by suicide, this time it is a recent Texas A&M grad
2. Every single university that has invited OpenAI into our midst should be asked to account for their choices.

Look folks gen AI videos are out in the wild so if you weren't already being careful about sharing rage bait videos then now is a great time to start

If you can't trace a video back to a trusted source then I recommend leaving it where it is, like a slice of bologna you found on the street

Not good.
The Canadian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Research is launching a US-style attack on EDI in Tri-Council funding.

As part of this attack, they are demanding disclosure of confidential demographic info + reviewer comments of all Canadian researchers who have applied b/w 2000-2025.

It's been three hours and I'm still thinking about this:
"The role of the teacher is not to be replaced. That role will be transformed to focus on the social and emotional motivation side as opposed to the academic part. I believe we're going to get to a point where a billion children around the world will be able to take this type of education."

Self-identification as LGBTQ in the USA has risen from 3.5% of the population to 9.3% in only a little more than a decade.

In the UK, over 10% of under-25s do, tripling in the same period.

Bigots see that as a crisis.

It's the duty of every decent person to understand it as a liberation.
Nearly 1 in 10 U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ, Gallup survey finds
The percentage of U.S. adults who identify as LGBTQ or something other than heterosexual increased to 9.3%, from 7.6% in 2023.

Look, the Humanities and the critical reading skills they impart are again proven essential here.

It was, after all, the gentle hobbits and not the 'hard men' who were the heroes of Tolkien's world.

Not through violence and antipathy, but compassion and camaraderie.

If we are going to insist on using British fantasy writers to model how we want to be in the world, Pratchett gives us a way better vision than Tolkien.

A neat tool I just came across: Viabundus, a digital road map of northern Europe 1350-1650, that lets you calculate contemporary travel routes/times. In 1500, going Amiens → Köln by horse took almost 7 days and 13 toll payments.

This stands out in an already maddening article. Gosh, are there any disciplines - perhaps ones that we’ve spent decades gutting because they encourage these very habits - that could effectively prepare students for this apparent Value(s?) Migration?
