"Instead of trying to influence laws across the Atlantic, Congress would serve American speech rights better by tackling the real censorship happening at home." Read from @mwils.bsky.social on why these hearings are a poor use of time:
The Censorship Alarm Is Ringing in the Wrong Direction
The recent hearing in the House Judiciary on a "foreign censorship threat" was centered on a misleading and ill-informed premise.

At today's House Judiciary hearing, House Republicans are once again obsessing over imaginary European censorship while ignoring the Trump administration's real assault on free speech: frivolous lawsuits against media, defunding universities over ideology, and retaliating against watchdog groups.

As a reminder, most business executives that have to touch A Computer while away from the office do so via a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which allows them to adjust profit forecasts from their second boat without spilling secrets to competitors and/or regulators
The failure of age-verification laws is now turning into a War on VPNs. The British government and a number of US states are now proposing that VPNs be banned entirely, or only accessible to those who have surrendered to facial scans, ID check and other identity verification.
'The UK war on VPNs is an embarrassment' – backlash grows over proposed VPN age-checks
Critics are warning against proposals to restrict VPN access — but will the plans actually become law?

Good that theyre backtracking but at the same time this whole fiasco is a great example of why its probably best to start working your way out of the adobe ecosystem sooner rather than later
Adobe appears to have reversed course on this. Animate is safe, at least for the immediate future.

The proposed charge of "unlawful exposure to a drag show" casts a wide net.

Parents could be locked up for exposing children to any "stylized gender expression that differs from the person's biological sex."

The funny thing is it doesn't even have to be drag. Any performance "harmful to minors" counts as a violation.

So Arizonans can look forward to cops with flashlights patrolling theater aisles of Marty Supreme or The Housemaid.

Anything to separate kids from parents I guess!

The bill was just introduced, so no need to pull the fire alarm yet. That said, I've seen lots of bills that criminalize performers or venues. The first that I've seen that criminalizes parents.

Understand this not as an immediate threat, but as an attempt to shift the window of what's acceptable.

The key phrase to remember "harmful to minors." It's been used to push for greater internet restrictions (age-verification, KOSA), VPN bans, book bans, attacks on librarians, healthcare defunding and, most recently, the push to repeal marriage equality.
Heritage Foundation, Focus on the Family, FRC and a host of other groups just launched a broadside campaign against marriage equality, saying that Obergefell is, wait for it ... "harmful to children."
