New folks following me from starter packs, hi! Unfollow if you find me boring. I’m a chronically ill middled-aged grad student & artist in Edmonton. I’m not famous & I’m not especially funny. I don’t have a newsletter but I might post about sickness, vegan snacks, prog rock, or performance art.
Thus is why I like this place.
Bluesky is the new place to go for high-level political discussions because half of the pundits, for lack of a better word, have credentials like "Guy who plays in a Portland post-punk band". "Professional video editor in San Diego". "Commodities trader in Nova Scotia". "Person named Sharon"

It's absolutely bizarre that "I do not want to get sick" is a mockable position now. Like, people mask for lots of reasons, but "sick bad" is so basic? I don't! want to get sick!!
Wrote about how disappointing it is that Jon Stewart punched down on people masking at @motherjones.com, when people should mind their own business and leave mask wearers be. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Hey Jon Stewart, jokes about wearing masks aren't funny
Critics of the Daily Show host say he's a hypocrite.

I’m in a few online groups for thrifting, vintage, or home decor. They are filled with boomers and silent gen who are *pissed* the younger generations don’t want thier Hummels or 600 piece dish set. It’s always framed as a character defect. Weird stuff.

In case you needed one more reason not to use AI …

The CEO of ChatGPT is blaming a teen’s suicide on his failure to follow the terms of service:

Adam Raine, 16, told ChatGPT he was suicidal and the AI bot told him his feelings were valid and even provided suggestions and detailed instructions.
OpenAI says teen's 'misuse' of ChatGPT is to blame for his suicide, because he broke the TOU: 'Users must comply with OpenAI's Usage Policies, which prohibit the use of ChatGPT for suicide or self-har...
The lawyer presenting Adam Raine's family calls the response "disturbing" and I have to agree.

I’m still waiting for someone to actually explain *any* ethical use of generative AI.
"Use AI for translations"

Hey, who was doing translations before? How did we train AI to do translations? Who was the author of the translations that were fed into AI?

Ah, I see, another "ethical" use.

It sure feels great to see this tech forced into absolutely everything but especially onto students.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

I know I’m a bit late but all I want for Christmas is this.
I'll accept it if 2026 is the year remembered for the death of AI.

Our healthcare system in Alberta needs more funding. To hire staff. To open beds. To have a system that functions for 5 million people. The UCP is the reason the system is failing. #ableg #abpoli

The place where we are cat sitting has a real Warhol screenprint and i’ve since been going on rabbit holes trying to identify the other prints.

It might have something to do with Montreal being a major shipping hub and Edmonton being isolated and far. but I swear the produce is so much better here. I noticed it a *lot* when we first moved to Edmonton and everytime we come home. You can just go to any random fruiterie and the produce slaps.

I’m seeing actual Christmas songs on my timeline and it’s some real wtf energy. I don’t understand how even the folks who like Christmas music (very odd, imo) aren’t utterly sick of it my now.
Glad to be heading to the fine-art museum and spend most of the day offline.

These guys are old pals, we used to share a jam space. I hope this translates into a good thing or two for them.
Important news for the Bluesky userbase (37-year-olds who went to the free Prospect Park shows every summer): Wolf Parade has the No. 1 song on Spotify right now because it's in the gay hockey movie.

I would *love* to move on, but until there is mass-scale air cleaning and sterilizing vaccines, I’ll be trying to hold on to the health i still have.
Please remember, every time you see a newspaper or magazine article denigrating people - people like myself - who choose to avoid infection with SARS-CoV-2, there will always be a tiny, quiet voice in the mind of the author whispering, 'what if they're right'?

We are right.

What about this is controversial? Beginning an inquiry by using AI to survey material is a very normal and appropriate use.

i really do believe the push for AI is purely ideological. a hatred of human beings and human creativity. these CEOs admit point blank that it hasn't made workflow more efficient. it's not profitable. the backlash is certainly bad for marketing and will hurt sales. they don't care.

Every once in a while, I’ll get asked if I’ve seen this Star Wars thing or that Marvel thing. I’ll respond thatI’ve never seen anything Star Wars or Marvel or whatever the frachiseand my interloctor will insist, of but you can *barely* tell this series or that movie is part if the franchise.

This is exactly it. There are tons of discoveries in the process, the process of seeking sources, of reading them, of taking notes, of putting fingings together. Of often discarding work. The relevations I get in a text that push and bolster my thinking are not the things found in a summary.
a big part of the issue surrounding the use of chatgpt/LLMs in academic research comes down to process vs. product. a lot of us know that the process of doing research matters because that's where intellectual work is done; but some "academics" and lots of techies only care about a fast product
