will never cease to amaze me that china built out it's HSR infra for about a trillion dollars - while the US spends roughly 1.5 trillion a year just on *car ownership*
My whole life we’ve been told that The US is simply too big to have high speed rail

“Pope Leo said in a Christmas Eve sermon on Wednesday that the story of Jesus being born in a stable because there was no room at an inn should remind Christians that refusing to help the poor & strangers today is tantamount to rejecting God himself.”

Obvious to any REAL Christian. #MerryChristmas
Pope Leo, on Christmas Eve, says denying help to poor is rejecting God
Leo has made care for immigrants and the poor key themes of his early papacy.

I'm making progress on a Christmas break project - rebuilding my kid's "new" 90s mountain bike. I greased the bottom bracket and headset, installed a new 1x crankset, and installed Maxxis Holy Roller tires. I'll finish tomorrow in time for us to ride & see X-mas lights tomorrow night. #Cycling #MTB

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

Between how bowl game decisions went with ISU and KSU, the chiefs moving to Kansas likely with huge tax incentives for their billionaire owner, and how the Twins owners continue to run that franchise into the ground, I'm kind of over mainstream sports - college and pro.

can’t overstate how badly young people have been fucked over by the “digital natives” label. they just don’t get any basic computer skills classes at all, it’s assumed knowledge. the situation is akin to if we abolished English as a subject for the new gen of “native English speakers”

people who are new to academia tend to find its obsession with sources and citations a brake on their "i'm just trying to be CREATIVE, man" mindset. but it turns out the relentless obsession with accuracy, citation, and *provenance* is a load-bearing pillar of the whole enterprise

suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).

Mobility in cities is about space.

If people could just intuitively understand the difference between a million, a billion, and a trillion, we’d all be better off.

That applies to dollars. To tons of carbon. And so on.

Math. It matters.

I have a cargo bike I can no longer use because its battery is dangerous. I'm sorry not willing to invest $600 in an aftermarket battery for it because the bike uses 22" wheels that only Rad manufactured. If something goes wrong with the bike, Rad isn't going to be around to get replacement parts.

Just about got hit by a driver turning right on red without checking if the crosswalk was clear. I was walking, but if it wasn't for my cyclist "HEY!" yell being on point he would have taken me out at the knees. He plugged his ears before I even had a chance to berate him, which I totally did.
