We're watching a classic in my introductory soil science lab this week. #Soil #Water

I encountered a fungus puffball today during the #Agron635 Soil and Water Conservation class. All the students were busy doing infiltration measurements with mini disk infiltrometers across our site, so I had to record a video for them. #fungi #soil

Every mention of Beri Weiss in the news makes me think of this beer first, and I want to keep it that way. It's not a great beer, but it's better than the news. #BeriWeiss #BerryWeiss #Leinenkugels

If anyone wants to join me in calling out NPR for victim blaming in this story, this is at the bottom of the article.

The r/soil subreddit has a crazy number of posts of people using a jar test to determine what their soil texture is. I wonder why laypeople go with that test instead of just doing texture by feel. It's not difficult. I don't get it.

My kid told his mom, "If Dad can bike to work in the rain then I can bike to school in the rain." #ProudDad #CommuteByBike

The Kansas Forest Service (not on Bluesky) has a calery pear (Bradford pear) buyback event on Oct. 4. See details from their email below. Their callery website is www.kansasforests.org/forest_healt...

I followed a Bobcat skid loader while commuting on my @surlybikes.bsky.social Skid Loader this morning. #CommuteByBike

We held our first #Agron635 Soil & Water Conservation lab field trip today. The students measured ground cover and slope. They will be developing a conservation plan for this farm. I spotted a wolf spider carrying an egg sack in freshly cut hay and a velvet ant as I was hiking between the groups

We saw the Budweiser Clydesdales tonight during our Final Friday #CriticalMass ride with #BikeWalkMHK.

Today is my 21st first day of college and my 34th first day of school!

I got this little ripper all tuned up and ready for the school year.

After waiting for parts for a week, I'm finally back to commuting on my Surly Skid Loader! I got it serviced last week and got a new chain. The bike shop didn't have the right brake pads in stock, and it turned out my favorite gears on the cassette were worn out so the new chain was slipping.

I'm Colby. I'm in Manhattan, Kansas and study wetland soils (yes, we have wetlands in Kansas!). I also write open textbooks for college level soil science courses and coach the K-State Soil Judging Team.

I took my eBike to get its 1-yr service at Ottawa (Kansas) Bike & Trail and brought my gravel bike to ride the Prairie Spirit Trail to Garnett and back - 50 miles round trip. I snapped some obligatory bridge pics and a caboose pic! I've never seen so many lizards and velvet ants on a bike trail!

My barbershop's dog, Buck is sporting a new, blue Mohawk and is looking rad as ever.

Almost 4 years ago I switched from canned shaving cream and disposable razors to a safety razor, shaving soap and cup, and a shaving brush. I bought a 3-pack of Arko shaving soap. Today I just opened up my second shaving soap. I've saved a ton of money and produced much less trash.

311's breakthrough album is 30 years old this year. Thanks, YouTube Music. My students already remind me enough that I'm old. Also, when will FM radio be dominated with millennial music like it was dominated with 60s-80s music when I was a kid?

I added a new decoration to my office today.

We stopped at the Bidwell fountain at the KSU Gardens on our ride and I told everyone about OW Bidwell, a pedologist and the first soil judging coach at KSU who donated the fountain to the gardens.

We rode on the BikeWalkMHK Final Friday Critical Mass Ride today with both of our eBikes. I rode my bike wearing Birkenstocks for the first time, and they might be my favorite biking footwear now! This video is from the ride home.

I also found the Iowa Conservation soil tunnel just east of Loon Lake during our Day 2 ride. I had to stop and talk shop for a bit.

On Day 2 of RAGBRAI we rode from Milford to my hometown of Estherville. We rode 42 miles and 2442 ft of climb, and we rode the gravel segment while we were in Minnesota.

Day 1 of RAGBRAI is in the books! We rode 64 miles with 3724 ft of climb and a 10 mph headwind out of the east all day, but it was cloudy and cool. Overall, it was a great day to be on a bike!
