I like to read, craft and watch sports (mainly tennis 🎾). Covid conscious 😷

It’s easier for me to imagine stopping watching TV than it is to stop reading, and I know that sounds pretentious but I don’t mean it to. Reading helps me understand myself and the world, many of the big breakthroughs I’ve had in therapy have been started by something I’ve read. It is a necessity.
It doesn't take a lot for people to start reading. But year after year, what keeps you coming back? In this week's Mark As Read, @mollytempleton.com discusses reading as a lifelong habit:

Becoming a reader is different than *staying* a reader...

the plethora of depressing articles about reading lately made me think about how a person winds up a reader—and stays that way. it's not a science, that's for sure! the weird alchemy of childhood and curiosity and countless variables that all could have easily been different

it feels gross that Substack does auto/non-consensual sign-ups. It’s a pretty schlocky growth strategy.

It’s been six years since the first reported case of SARSCov2.

It’s never too late to wear a mask.

It’s never too late to clean the air.

Every infection avoided or delayed is a win for long term health.

We can drastically reduce transmission if everyone does their part.

“[Eventually] humanities depts will be forced to accept AI-authored assignments, as part of revised university policy to cooperate with these billionaires. It's already happening, and our response needs to be decisive. Because our students' ability to *think* is at stake.”

really important thread ⬇️
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

The markets are staying afloat right now on the hope that AI will destroy American workers. What a bleak thing.

My mom told her physical therapist she wears a mask because her husband and daughter are immunocompromised. The PT said she is too but isn't worried bc she knows if she dies she is going to heaven. Then her co-worker yelled, “Shut up Debbie you wear a seatbelt and take blood pressure meds” 👀

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

A new decade-long Brexit study explains it:

a 6–8% hit to GDP – that's £180bn-£240bn a year – means less tax, less investment and less money for everything else.

Brexit made Britain poorer. Much poorer.
