If you remove "my wife and" or "and my wife," the answer is whichever way sounds correct with what is left in the sentence you are constructing.

The "jokes" and general callousness in response to the Epst*in emails just affirms my belief that the gulf between survivors of sexual violence and those who aren't / or otherwise do not recognize their experiences as violent is WIDE.

Not to get all Sun Tzu on it, but when the enemy is weak and divided amongst itself, you do not relieve the enemy by allowing their partisans into your camp. You drive them closer together, force them into tighter company, and intensify their conflict.
