I think most artists hit a point where they’re like, well if I can’t be the best artist, I shall be the most ME artist.

Ideal conditions for starting your passion project will never come. You will never feel skilled enough to make it. There will never be a moment where you stop being scared to start. Do it anyway. Do it badly. Do it scared. Just make that thing that’s clawing at the door of your soul; It wants out.

Reminder that "not acting" shapes the future as much as "acting" does and that not choosing is a choice.

I'm not being the most eloquent about my thoughts, but bottom line is, adult themes shouldn't be censored just because they make some people uncomfortable. Simply look the other way. Simply do not consume media you don't want to see. That's it. Have a nice day.

i bring a real "stop saying this is impossible/a problem only solved by tech when you mean institutionally we've committed to under-resourcing human expertise" to a lot of meetings that people are forced to begrudgingly agree with before moving on as if i said nothing
The (Ed) Tech Industry has made citizens believe that the problem with education is reading, thinking, and writing when the problem with education is austerity.

Reading, thinking, and writing are not the problems to be solved. Austerity is.

I LOVE the idea of assigning zines. I think one of the other major challenges of, well, education in general, is creating space for all different learning and thinking styles. Zines can do that really well.
Serious answer: zines! Once you make something and finish it, even if it's a single zine for a friend, one of the takeaways is the lesson of process. Zines are low stakes, you make a thing with words and images, get to hold it in your hand and then think about what you would have done differently.

yes i perhaps did purchase a fair few zines and other artworks today but this is all for research purposes i promise

Same with making art—you learn a new thing BY doing a new thing!
Getting stuck while we're writing is a feature, not a bug. It's the point of the exercise. It's what happens when we are trying to express something we have not expressed before. That friction forces us to make the tools we need to understand and express it. Getting stuck is how we make meaning.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Art emerges in the dialogue between artist and medium. Learning the discipline of working within the medium's constraints, and developing approaches and techniques that shine within them, is what polishes and exalts the art.

This is why AI "art" of all kinds isn't really art.

If university leadership tells you they don't have money to pay faculty or staff or to support students, look at:

-how much they're spending on policing
-how much they're spending on outside consultants
-leadership's own salaries and salary growth over time

btw if you're so petrified of doing a bad job that you can't even start, then what you need isn't advice on how to make comics. you need to learn to embrace being messy and bad at things and being okay with that because it's necessary, and actually it's GOOD. being messy is WONDERFUL

I mean this so honestly, but you absolutely should be making the most "Mediocre Shit" and be proud of that

Low brow, high brow?! Whatever! Art can and should exist purely for the sake of creativity. real freedom and diversity within art is all about CREATING outside of perceived "artistic" value

Me, gearing up to do the last chunks of research necessary to turn in my written thesis, start looking for work, pack up and move house: I gotta be making more zines. I gotta be making little guys. I need to be doing arts and crafts. I wanna read more books. I gotta compose more music.
