The Eric Schickler essay in Larry Bartel's symposium on "What Trump Has Taught Us About Political Science" is one of the most insightful pieces I've read in 2025.

US institutions turned out to be weak, and we have to rethink conventional wisdom.

Donald Trump is the planted flag of every crook and rapist. He is the lost cause of the south. He is the vice of the slave master, the shadow that clouds his superego at all hours, the sweat on his brow that makes him never end in his gluttony, lust, and greed. He is spiritual excrement incarnate.

Tom doing to the Lord’s work on a Saturday instead of something more fun (thanks Tom, great 🧵
My mistake has been trying to explain what "fascism" is to people who don't care what it is.

So I'm going to try something else. Let's do this as a practical thought exercise.

If America *were* fascist *today* - what would you have to do differently in your daily life? /1

Welcome to Apocalypse Capitalism.

As one prominent tech VC put it: “Maybe if you aren’t trying to destroy the world, you’re not trying hard enough.”

Preach.
Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

No one works harder than Tom to remind Bluesky to keep our current political situation in perspective. Always grateful for these reminders.
Look, I know I poke the kids about fascism, but in a fascist state, you don't get charged with a felony about a sandwich and then walk out when a jury - and the nation - laughs at the prosecutors.

This account will be equal parts hopeful and gloating for the rest of the evening. To that end: Pour one out for the pile of NYC billionaire money that was utterly incinerated tonight!

Excellent article. I’m so tired of being trolled by the US government.
Trump’s voters have become like the members of the administration, delighting in the crassness and obscenity that pours out of the president and his circle whenever they are challenged. But policies suffer and the public is poorly served.

Great 🧵.
JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧵

Ethelred the Unready paid off the Danes, John Lackland signed the Magna Carta under duress, Richard II threw nobles in prison, Henry VI was catatonic periodically… so yeah, the English decided monarchy wasn’t the hill they wanted to die on.
been reading a lot of medieval English history recently and it's instructive as to why the Anglo political tradition evolved away from monarchy. every 4th king or so would turn out to be a murderous lunatic, people got sick of it
it is kind of interesting how not only do they openly yearn for monarchy, but they also want a system of monarchy more absolute than almost any of the historical reference points where the president can tax, spend, declare war, even suspend habeas corpus at will

The call, as usual, is coming from inside the Reich.
One of perverse dynamics of Trumpism, how a frequently toadyish establishment press undergirds a system in which Trumpists regularly accuse Democrats of being “the Nazis” and we have frequent revelations in which Trump insiders tell each other “we’re the Nazis”

Today’s peaceful protests were the perfect example of what @radiofreetom.bsky.social has repeated ad nauseum (only to receive ad hominem attacks):

We are not yet living under fascism.

Many of our current leaders are fascists. But they don’t control us yet and we need to make sure they never do.

‼️‼️‼️ Got word of a new way the billionaire in charge of SSA is fucking over the American people!!!! TLDR: This will definitely lead to people applying for benefits losing out on money, and probably some hefty lawsuits for attorneys that know what’s up. The long version is gonna be long so let’s go.

Y’all, JD Vance said Trump was Hitler and still got elected Vice President. Let’s not hold stupid shit against our own candidate, esp because every Progressive has probably joked about being a “Communist” at least once, given how centrist the party machine sways. Trump is pro Gulag, not Platner.
Republicans have a right to power and are valid officials for office at the age of 19 with no experience outside of their popular racist YouTube channel, democrats must be cultivated angels delivered by political machines that grow them in vats and release them for the senate at the age of 79
