No power, no phone, no radio: why comms dropped out during the central Victorian fires
We need reliable communications during climate emergencies like bushfires and floods. But changes have left regional communities exposed.

Things have cooled down somewhat in Victoria today - although we still have multiple fires burning...
But NSW is heating up - don't forget the wildlife folks :)
When putting out containers of water for wildlife on hot days, please place a rock and a stick or two in there, so small animals, including insects and reptiles, can get in and out easily. Placing containers in a shady and protected spot is best.

From Zoos Victoria - Healesville Sanctuary closed tomorrow because of the forecast heat.
Zoo staff will still be out in it, making sure animals have what they need.
Spare a thought.
Postpone your visit but still plan to go, another day!

Female Powerful Owl in a Brisbane conservation area* this morning.
* Incidentally, an area that the government seems very interested in developing into a "major tourist attraction" in time for the 2032 Olympic Games. Something nobody wants except developers, as far as I can tell.

This stolen generator provides back up power to UGFM, a local community radio station who does emergency broadcasting during emergencies, as it did on Black Saturday.

Great thread.

"These models optimise for likely answers, not guaranteed truth. That’s a poor match for formal proofs where every step must be correct."

This is in general the case with what we call "AI" (ie machine learning): they can be of an efficient help, if you know what you are looking for.
AI companies have turned their attention to maths.

Between splashy headlines and sober inspection lies a more interesting story: systems that impress and develop, yet still lean on humans.

What happens when AI starts tackling maths - and what doesn’t?
