I needed to haul something very large and heavy today. Did I buy a pickup truck, saddling myself with insane monthly payments, insurance, and maintenance? Nope, I rented one for $80, did the task, and returned it. It's that simple.

I also made friends at Open Street-type events such as CicLAvia/ActiveStreets SGV in LA. I didn’t think that would ever happen.
We passed so many of my friends on our ride to/from summer school today that my kids asked “Why do you have so many friends on the Greenway?”

Driving my car makes me feel lonely & isolated.

Riding my bike for transportation helps me see & connect with my community.
Get out of your car if you want to be less lonely
As new research shows evidence that good public transport links are the key to feeling more connected, non-driver Helen Coffey advocates for getting out of our insular metal boxes and into the world

I went to this a few years ago and it was fun. Miniature train setups, tours of old train passenger cars and I think Metrolink/Amtrak cars. All free. 🚂💺🚉
Love trains? 🚂

Well get your cabooses down to Union Station on Sept 20-21 from 10am-6pm for the annual Union Station Train Festival! Fun activities are on track that weekend that you'll go loco for!

The PE's first interurban rail line, the Long Beach Line, began service #OTD in 1902 and lasted until April 1961. Most of it was rebuilt in 1990, known today as the Metro (A) Line.

#CicLAvia this Sunday has been postponed, but if you still want the exact same experience, you can still go to ActiveSGV's Mission at Twilight 5-mile open streets event later that day between 3-8pm from #SouthPasadena to #SanGabriel:

#SGV
We love Active Streets because of you, our community. These moments remind us that we’re stronger together. As we count down to Mission at Twilight, we hope this day offers space to breathe, connect, and move freely on car-free streets. We hope to see you this Sunday.

“We found there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10% then driving in that city went up by 10%.” Still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads leads to more cars stuck in the same congestion. Understanding #InducedDemand Via @wired.com
What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse
The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note ...

When I learned years ago that the LAX Metro Transit Center was costing $900 million to build, I didn’t understand how a light rail stop could be so expensive, and thought it was a massive waste

Wow, was I wrong. They built a generational piece of civic infrastructure.

Hey, you know what goes really fast, takes up a lot more space, emits a lot more pollution/noise/GHG emissions, costs a lot more public money, and is FAR more dangerous in cities than any kind of bike in a city where most don’t drive?

Cars.

So, about that “enough is enough”…
After we broke this yesterday, Adams confirmed he's enacting a 15 mph e-bike speed limit in NYC because "enough is enough."

The news caught Lyft, which runs NYC's Citi Bike fleet, surprise. "If this proposal is real, we would express deep concern," Lyft says. www.nydailynews.com/2025/06/04/n...

I wish more businesses did this!
#BikesInside is a great convenience for riders, especially in areas with chance of theft. Placing a small bike rack inside the entry is the ultimate Bike Love move for a small business.
The Blue House Cafe in the sleepy logging town of Vernonia, Oregon invites people to park their bicycles *inside* the cafe because they know that #BikeMeanBusiness They can fit 20 bikes in the rack but only 2 cars at the curb. #BicycleTourism #BikesAreBetter
