My apologies once again. I was in the middle of writing Wednesday’s post when Spectrum went down, and stayed down. Now they say it won’t be back up until 5 am, which is just a tad too late to start working again. So I’m giving up and going to bed. We’ll try again, once again, tomorrow.

Good point. Even a golf cart would have been safer.

“… run over by an 87-year-old man.”

Again, something I notice in Ca. even over other places I’ve lived is how endless car-dependent development, hand-in-hand with sweetheart property tax levels set by Prop 13, induce seniors to stay in places where they need cars for daily life.

Very good point. Please leave that as a comment to this story, because it adds a lot of context.

When people ask, “why do you care so much about transportation safety in Bend?”

It’s so stuff like this never happens here. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Update: Regan Cole-Graham, the 36-year old, seven-months pregnant Google exec who was killed, along with her unborn baby, while riding an ebike with her husband and sons in Playa del Rey, was run down from behind and run over by an 87-year old man: bikinginla.com/2026/02/02/3...
Update: 36-year old woman and unborn baby killed riding ebike on Pershing Drive in Playa del Rey, where bike lanes removed in 2017 - BikinginLA
Apparently, last month isn’t done with us yet. And it ends with perhaps the worst news of all. After a month that had already seen seven people lose their lives riding a bicycle in Southern California...

Sigh. Another day, another person killed riding a bike. Story soonish.

I'm not going to apologize for last night's meltdown. But it's another reminder that it's okay to not be okay. Do what you need to feel better, or reach out for help if you need it. We all have those days when we're not okay. And that's okay.

Never have I ever...reached out to someone hosting a Go Fund Me page for more information, and gotten a vaguely threatening email from a lawyer from the victim's family. Until today.

It’s been a year of having using a flag to create a conversation instead confrontation.

Through effective non verbal communication I can clearly share with drivers what space is required for cycling safety.

This is the most significant thing I’ve ever done for my personal safety.

Version 2 soon!
I made a thing and I think I ❤️ it!

Repurposing a child’s kickstand and an ATV flag to create a visual reminder of what 3 feet is for drivers.

It’s hard to gauge distances at speed. This flexible and strong flag should provided much needed space to my family as we use our #CargoBike for travel.

I agree. That's going to be a multi-million dollar payout, at LA taxpayer expense.

The fastest I ever went was about 65+/- mph, passing cars on the right on a freeway with a steep downhill and a 55 mph speed limit in the pre-bike computer days. How I didn't kill myself I have no idea.
February 3, 2026 at 8:16 PM
I agree. It was put in after a public community process that took years, like anything else in LA. And like most such processes, people screamed afterwards that no one ever told them about it, when all they had to do was show up.

My apologies. I'm torn tonight between the gut wrenching heartbreak of a pregnant woman and her baby losing their lives just for riding a bike in LA, and white hot rage because LA ripped out the bike lanes where she died. I'll see you tomorrow. Probably. bikinginla.com/2026/02/03/m...

My apologies. I’ve spent the last hour trying to write today’s post, and all I’ve done is type and delete, type and delete, with no idea what to say or how to say it. To be honest, I’m just numb tonig...

Exactly. And memory could be playing tricks on me, but I seem to recall another bicyclist killed in that same area.
February 3, 2026 at 6:53 AM
That was definitely part of it. The bike lanes were removed because drivers were pissed off that they couldn't speed anymore, business owners didn't believe families rode bikes and actually bought things, and because right-wing talk radio campaigned against it.
