I wrote up a (lengthy) summary of my biking in 2024, a total of 7,880 miles. Of that, about 2,770 was on e-bikes, mostly towing trailers doing volunteer work. The remaining 5,110 almost entirely on my Specialized Diverge (a few on other non-e-bikes), mainly exploring.

Reflections on a year of biking for 2024
Everywhere I’ve ridden my bike in the PNW in 2024. Since shortly after moving to Seattle in July 2022, I have not driven a car. I’ve gotten around by bike and public transit. During 202…

SEATTLE!!!

We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

My health insurance (through ACA via Washington state's plan system) is going up by only ~$40/mo, which would be great news if the base rate wasn't already $2,886/mo. Health insurance sucks.

Katie Wilson is up 91 votes in the Seattle Mayor's race as Wilson-mentum continues to pay dividends.
Wilson-mentum is real.

The gap in the Seattle Mayor's race has narrowed to just 4,300 votes, or 1.88%.

I'm really struggling to believe that this country isn't just irrecoverably fucked. Between the federal government, housing crises, car brain, and basically everything, what's the end game?

Mamdani is going to require everyone to read the Karen. I haven’t seen you in this neighborhood before, do you live here?
Mamdani is going to implement Shakira law. Hips will no longer be able to lie.
Mamdani is going to implement Shania law. That don't impress me much.

After many hours of studying and poking at maps of the streets and bike paths all around West Seattle, I think I am coming to the conclusion that we should really build a first-class bike route through the West Duwamish Greenbelt connecting the 21st Ave SW NG to W Marginal Way SW / Duwamish Trail.

Yoooo #Seattle! Help feed our neighbors. With SNAP funding held up indefinitely and in the midst of massive inflation, tariffs, unemployment, and more... food banks are facing a crisis of need. Food banks can buy food at a ~3:1 rate compared to what you can buy, so cash is best.

Please share!

Welp, the #Seattle storm this week re-leafed the Spokane Street bridge / Delridge Way SA / 22nd Ave SW connector bike paths, so I got out there again today and got it cleaned up again. Nice and fresh again, for now. ✨

It sounds like a provocation, but it's the essential point of my message to retailers and advocates around the world:

Think and speak in terms of the customer, not the vehicle, when you talk about traffic.

The rest will follow naturally.

Today I rode in heavy rain to deliver 20 bags of groceries from White Center Food Bank to 10 families in White Center, Burien, and Seattle for the @cascade.org #PedalingReliefProject – we use volunteers with bikes and trailers to deliver food to neighbors with mobility or accessibility challenges

Honestly no earthly idea how Ride with GPS calculates elevation gain/loss. How you can go from 160 ft to 54 ft and only have an elevation change of -58 ft? The math isn't mathing and it's really messing with my ability to evaluate route flatness.

One counter sneckdown is that leaves and snow also let you see just how much cars encroach into unprotected bike lanes. You see the telltale lack of leaves on a bend and 😳
The leaves on Rainier Ave are making a pretty convincing argument that the center turn lanes don't get much use -- lots of excess road space that could be protected bike infrastructure.

The sheer number of targeted ads I am getting about immigrating to other countries should be a sign of … something.

Heyo, West Seattle cyclists! I cleaned up the leaves on the Spokane Street bridge / Delridge Way SW / 22nd Ave SW connector again. It was quite leafy. I also trimmed back a lot of the edges. Could use more trimming but looking good!

It shouldn’t be controversial at all to put out political ads in a whole slew of languages, *especially* when the candidate does or can speak them. The whole idea is to reach people and to represent people. ❤️
