Rough vibes on this website today, likely because people feel Hopeless and Helpless Because Can't Stop It and No One Who Is Supposed To Is Trying To So Now We're Fighting Each Other™. I recommend activities such as book, or potentially instrument if you like instrument, or even do talk on phone.

Every year is a big year! And we’ve entered a dedicated, deeply satisfying era of birding. Personally observed over 220 species in California in 2025 & spotted many rarities even as relative novices. Fortunate to spend much of my life outdoors with my photog sweetie, observing our surroundings. 🦉🧵
A couple of lifers to round out 2025! Both vagrants in the SF Bay Area and both spotted by @brittashoot.com so I could take photos. A yellow-crowned night heron in Sausalito last week and a long-tailed duck (without the long tail) in Alameda yesterday 🪶

Heard NPR’s correspondent, who is not in Venezuela, explain that people in Venezuela woke up to this news. Yet everyone I’ve heard from was up all night.

Intense observation on what the U.S. state is and isn’t doing requires critical attention to what the U.S. press is and isn’t doing, too.

Happy New Year! May 2026 bring us advancements in treatments, support, and more awareness for Long COVID, ME, and related diseases.

We’ve been lucky to welcome 2026 with a massive wildflower bloom in the desert 🎆🌼

Yearly reminder that you CAN just become a different person, you're not as imprisoned in your life as you think. You can just be the one who dresses nice or exercises or reads a lot, or whatever. You can just start doing it, some people might make fun of you but they don't really care.

Since I dumped some really bad news on y'all I wanna tell you about the other side of social media.

It's children of anti-vaxxers turning 18 and filming themselves getting vaxxed.

Wrote a few personally meaningful pieces in 2025, including this @kqedarts.bsky.social report on Bay Area masks-required concerts, which went a bit viral. These are some of the most special rooms I’m privileged to occupy 😷❤️

This week, so-called progressive media dudes used their huge platforms to mock people who mask.

You know what's actually progressive? Documenting the Long COVID crisis without minimizing or gaslighting. Support the serious independent media we all deserve! Help fund @thesicktimes.org into 2026 😷💸⬇️

It’s wild we’re still talking about masks. I still mask up in grocery stores, elevators, public bathrooms, and public transit cuz I don’t like being sick and I don’t want to get my kid sick and it doesn’t have to be more complicated than not liking being sick. It’s weird anyone would question that.

one thing that sunk only more fully in, being sick with covid again, is how people position those of us who never stopped masking as having some weird individual vibes-based fear, when the reality is the end of what *community-level* covid prevention
and care infrastructure there was is why we mask

losers mocking folks forced to DIY public health can't fathom the endurance required to wear an N95 in public spaces

they'd never abide the physical discomfort + outright malice from strangers, colleagues & loved ones

but those with integrity see fellow maskers & see tireless fking accomplices 😷🫡
Dear Jon Stewart c/o @weeklyshowpodcast.bsky.social
I recently watched, with great surprise and disappointment, a weeklyshowpodcast segment in which you and other "personalities," gleefully mocked and derided the relatively small subset of individuals who continue to wear a face mask in public.

a pathetic show from a man who won many hearts defending 9/11 responders, many of whom were harmed by inadequate respiratory protection; such a shame that not only did stewart fail to internalize the grim reality that gvmts shirk responsibility, abandon victims, but that he’s joined in the derision.
