It's early for Thanksgiving but hey let's all give thanks for @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social doing the work -- their efforts to spread the word about cool books is so very welcome.
As we near the end of the year, the last thing you might want is a big, chunky fantasy or science fiction book to drag into the new year. Good thing @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social's got 5 underrated novellas to recommend instead!

+1 to all of these that I've read (A Necessary Chaos in particular is brilliant), and also throwing in there Alex Jeffers' A Mourning Coat, which is seriously one of the most subtle, light touch pieces of fiction (speculative or otherwise) I've read in ages & more people should read it.

Thank you to Alex Brown for including Countess on this list. It's especially wonderful to be on it with @brentclambert.bsky.social and @ebonidunbar.bsky.social who I 🖤

I knew I took risks when I wrote Countess. But my goal as an artist is to be bold. Its heartening to see that appreciated. 🔥✊

Thank you as always to @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social for being such a champion of A NECESSARY CHAOS ❤️🫶

I have yelled about MOST of these here before (some extensively), but I could go on and on about all of these were I not limiting myself to ONE POST PER BOOK.

Another October almost over. My debut novel is THE DEVOURERS is a genrefluid book, but with strong strains of horror running through it, if you're looking to cram in another read for the season.
My Lambda Award-winning debut novel THE DEVOURERS, a dark, queer, mythic realist tale about sex, love, violence, & shapeshifting, has finally surpassed 20k sales. Those may be rookie numbers to many authors, but for me, it's a big deal, even if not big money. Sincerest gratitude to my readers 🖤

a fascinating thing about replies to this post is the many different genres where people are locating this problem. I think it is maybe everywhere! publishers need to invest in developing their authors and stop overworking their editors!
weird reading gripe: I'm noticing an uptick in similes and metaphors that don't quite work. it'll be like "bitter as seawater" or "in constant motion, like a cockroach." like, I get the vibe the author is going for but on a mechanical level it doesn't make any sense.

One of the things I enjoyed most about studying Victorian lit in college was how these people would read each other for filth in the most roundabout ways. And "My Sincere Apologies For the Demon" by @adrianwardwrites.bsky.social puts me exactly in that mindset. I LAUGHED so many times here. Read it!

sharp house by @spicycloaca.bsky.social over at @nightmare-magazine.com is a horrific, emotional gut punch. Its language is really rich and makes the gore almost beautiful. And the last three lines made me sit back with the amount of anguish it expressed.

I WAS REINCARNATED AS THE 7TH PRINCE SO I CAN TAKE MY TIME PERFECTING MY MAGICAL ABILITY is without a doubt the longest anime title I've ever watched lmao. But it has gotten surprisingly good and has me invested in this world and characters. Evil chimera pope/his crew have been vicious!!
