Turns out stabbing a guy in church DOESN'T solve all your problems.
Writers, describe your WIP in the worst way possible.

Some jerk heard “you can’t take it with you” and decided to make that everyone else’s problem

Local dragonrider doesn't know how to trust others and winds up at the center of a giant solar system shattering mess (very negative) and maybe a polycule (very positive).

SCROLLING STOP POINT!

Have you eaten a food?
Have you drank a water?
Have you taken a shower?

Advanced level: Have you done a stretch/stood up and walked around?

ADHD level: Do you need to pee?

Go do that shit! GO DO IT NOW!

Heat without humidity is sneaky because you don't notice how much water you've lost until it's too late. But if you proactively stay hydrated, it's not bad.
Heat *with* humidity - your body can't cool down. Don't matter how much you hydrate when your sweat doesn't evaporate.
*taps mic* Hi, there! I’ve lived all over the country, wet, dry, hot, cold, and high humidity will not only kill your ass dead faster than anything else, it will suuuuuck the entire time you’re dying. Your low resting heart rate won’t do shit when your sweat is a marinade instead of a coolant.

Today I am doing book edits because... man, they're fun. Seriously. Free of the feverish waking dream of drafting, I get to zoom out and just...fix stuff that then STAYS FIXED. It feels like those glorious occasions where you get to legitimately swing a sledgehammer.

my hottest educational take is that schools should actively, non-punitively teach students how to admit when they don't know something, aren't sure or have made a mistake, with various teaching frameworks adapted to support this ideal, because people who can't admit fault are breaking the world

Got good feedback on a manuscript today--agent thinks it's got legs, albeit is too long and needs an actual middle--so that's my summer project sorted.

THE INCANDESCENT is a book about money and education and status symbols, about loving your career, about demons, about magic, about fantasy school - but most of all about how 'school' is always a kind of fantasy. Available now!

Good morning, time for a milk safety thread!

The USA is NOT ceasing all milk testing. Many of you have seen www.reuters.com/business/hea... which reads "US FDA suspends milk quality tests amid workforce cuts"

These cuts SUCK, but all milk testing is NOT ceasing. Thread on milk testing:
US FDA suspends milk quality tests amid workforce cuts
The Food and Drug Administration is suspending a quality control program for testing of fluid milk and other dairy products due to reduced capacity in its food safety and nutrition division, according to an internal email seen by Reuters.

I’m an autistic poet!

One fave of mine that I wrote is called, “trans people gather for a name reveal party and play Apples to Apples except all the cards are fill-in-the-blank”

I also invented the acrostic-spine format, which is a mashup of acrostic & book-spine poetry.

Amen.

(Also: what a good dog.)
Had a great day today. Some fun day job problems, progress in yard, nice dinner with spouse, settling in to read.

I worked a lot as a kid, from age 12 on. I too have a difficult time recognizing what is "reasonable effort" and tend to daze and discomfit employers. Like a commenter on this thread says: superpowers, but not for free.

My kids don't have jobs. School is their job, and I'm thankful every day.
I've talked about this with Don before, but for those of you who don't know the story: I grew up participating in the form of child labor that's currently (and always has been) 100% legal: a child of any age working for a business 100% owned by their parents that is not mining or manufacturing.
I quit the board of NCMEC over their refusal to take a stand against this.
