My dentist has an ai assistant that apparently hallucinated a problem with my daughter's paperwork and was going to delete her appointment for Friday. And of course when I called to get this fixed I talked to an AI and went around in circles before I was able to get a human on the phone.

How did Renaissance states track and record floods? At what point did these disasters go from being thought of as one-offs to signs of a more systemic crisis? I enjoyed thinking through these and similar questions in my work on Florentine water maps, out now with Grey Room!

Studies are always showing things like this.
Being ultra-wealthy doesn't exponentially increase happiness. Being normal-people-rich so you're not always in crisis does.
A mansion doesn't make you happier, a nice house in a nice safe convenient neighborhood does.
A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected.

So it looks like i hadn't mentioned this, here, so just in case let me say this plain: Instructure, the parent company & producer of the Canvas learning management software platform, has partnered with OpenAI, as of last year. There are a number of claims being made about privacy but… well. Heads up

The most unsubtle, heavy-handed claims made by pomo academic types have turned out to all be true. Gender is a relation of domination that requires constant, affirming witness. Capitalism will require extractive colonial relations. There’s no subtlety. Every day is like a 101 seminar at Oberlin.

Viva la California unida.
I was thinking of a snide comment about if America wants territory returned to it, I want Florida to be returned to Spain. Then I looked up the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, and I’d like to expedite this request. Make Florida Spain Again!

Playing hide and seek at school (3rd grade) and hid in a bathroom stall. The stall dividers had moulding I could fit my feet on. I tried to get down, my braid got caught on the hook on the back of the door, slammed into the divider wall. Chipped a tooth.
What's the most ridiculous way you ever hurt yourself? I got out of the tub, skidded in water and tripped over the toilet. Ankle sprain.

Apparently at some point I turned the heat off, too. Jail for 10,000 years for me.
Spouse: why is the bathroom window open in the middle of a rain storm?
Me: I just thought we needed some fresh air. The air is super nice and clean when it's raining!

I rewatched Conclave days ago. A starkly beautiful piece of art, it is simultaneously bleak and hopeful, occupying sorrow and mundanity and ugliness and love.

Then this weekend happened. Burke's writing likewise addresses these bleak days, while pointing to the spaces our human goodness can fill.
