It’s rough out there right now, and so I say, ✨with love✨ to all of you: do not give yourself bangs.

We are gonna get through this and the person you will be on the other side is going to be so glad you did not take a pair of nail scissors to your own hair. 🩷🩷🩷

Repeating my mantra that the average person out there has *no idea* how much of a fiasco the student loan program is right now and that 90% of it has to do with politicking (going back decades) and nothing to do with the borrower.
New: Secretary Linda McMahon says the Department of Education has decided to "pause" garnishing wages for student loans.

Outstanding - and digitized!
Johannes Balbus' Catholicon -- an immense Latin grammar and dictionary. Printed in Mainz in 1460 by Gutenberg. BPL's copy is one of relatively few printed on vellum (animal skin). Taking some pics with my iphone(!), you can see collagen fibers, hand-applied pigments, and ink squash from the press.

Here’s a dirty little secret, according to studies - people usually turn in things they’ve found. For example, people usually return wallets and before you ask, rates of wallet return are actually higher ⬆️ when they have cash inside (going from about 51% return rate to about 60% return rate).
My wife left her bag on the MTA yesterday and today… it was at lost and found! Somebody actually went through the trouble.

Given how absolute shit things are, this was an unexpected kindness. I credit the good feelings engendered by the Mamdani administration. :)

Also the good people at the MTA.

I hate the Nazgûl’s treatment of the hobbits as much as you do but the security of Middle Earth is critical in this age. I believe we can strike a balance between the rights of Shire residents and black land border enforcement with proper training and funding.

German public broadcaster NDR (which is based in Hamburg) has co-produced the German version of the show for 50 years.

Me: good boy, good boy (scratches him behind the ears)
Charlie: 😺😺😺
Me: you're a good boy but I'm not going to feed you yet
Charlie: 😾 (jumps off couch and goes in the corner to pout)

All the weirdo shit I was surrounded by in the '90s when I worked with "futurists" and at Wired magazine, etc. (and when I in fact agreed with them on some stuff, even as I thought they were way out there on other stuff) now seems outright sinister to me.

i think this gets at something important which is that normal people are rightly pissed off that they’re having normal time stolen from them by this ravaging horde of jumped up mall cops. everybody has to work in the morning! why is it THEIR job to hold their community together in such a basic way!
🔥 From @statuscoupnews.bsky.social : “This is nuts. What the fuck is going on? I’ve never protested in my life… they tell you it’s immigrants — it’s fucking anybody. They’re just trying to scare people. I’m not paid to be here. I have to work in the morning. This is wrong.”

The stink of the Lord of Flies.
Every couple of weeks we get a different description of the apparently awful stench coming off our necrotic president and I think it's high time the media nail down exactly what kind of rotten meat covered in women's perfume he actually smells like.

Watching these thugs take pratfalls exposes the hokey theatricality of their whole enterprise. Remember how important aesthetics are to this and other authoritarian movements.

This! The Smithsonian has a long history of responding the wrong way to political pressure. If you don’t know about the Enola Gay controversy, there is a huge literature (which I used in my museum Anthro courses). It isn’t unique although the politics may be the clearest there. 1/
Also and again:

There is a direct line from the reactionary, right-wing manufactured controversy around, & cancellation of, planned 1995 Smithsonian Enola Gay exhibit to Trump et al regime’s attacks on museum now.
It may seem a small thing as we face deadly force, but the regime threatening the Smithsonian matters. NPR, like other media, fails to clearly label the threat to withhold congressionally appropriated funds as illegal. We need to write and call Congress members to urge them to support the museum.
