I've had this tab open for several weeks, and I finally got around to it. This @skornhaber.bsky.social piece is a really thoughtful examination of a generation of critics it's very easy — and still sometimes warranted — to caricature. I learned a lot. www.theatlantic.com/culture/2025...
Traditional Criticism Is in Trouble. Here’s What’s Replacing It.
Demand for cultural commentary is higher than it’s ever been—but now that commentary is coming from unconventional new sources.

It is genuinely incredible to me how much evidence there is to support investing in the public good and how much animus there is to do this simple, effective thing.

Writers, unite! We must reclaim the em dash from AI!
Inside the unofficial movement to save the em dash — from A.I.
The extra-long hyphen known as the em dash is common in AI-generated text. While some writers have responded by choosing to avoid the punctuation mark, others are fighting back.

One outlet that had the story right from the start: The Sun Journal of Lewiston, Maine. The shutting-down Farmer’s Almanac is based in Lewiston. (The Old Farmer’s Almanac is based in New Hampshire and is owned by Yankee Publishing.)

Heartened to see Indiana University resume print publication of Indiana Daily Student, dropping bizarre demand that newspaper not print news. I often say I learn from my students. Looks like the student editors of the IDS taught IU leaders something, too. https://loom.ly/JMYaFSU

Tired
By Langston Hughes

I am so tired of waiting,
Aren't you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two -
And see what worms are eating
At the rind.

Halloween always makes me think of one of my favorite Oz characters, Jack Pumpkinhead. I met him through everyone's favorite creepy kid movie, Return to Oz, before meeting his literary counterpart. I wrote an essay about Jack and pumpkins for The Characters of Oz (2023).

My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

@zohrankmamdani is a deeply thoughtful human being and we think he would make the best NYC mayor imaginable. We feel this as New Yorkers, as Jews and as human beings who are desperate for kindness, compassion and empathy to be represented in our politics.
