It was in the reign of George II that the above-named personages lived and quarrelled ; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now

Half hour environment sketch, Tasmania, late Cretaceous. Leaellynasaura mid-molt out of summer browns and into winter whites scans the landscape in the weak fading Antarctic sunlight.

This sounds like a silly test but the hypothesis it provides evidence for is an interesting one: that *any* neutral but unexpected event tends to make observers more pro-social and sociable towards strangers, because it disrupts their routine and makes them pay closer attention to those around them.
Science will often take you to unexpected and delightful places. In this study, researchers hypothesized that riders in a crowded subway car would be more likely to offer their seat to a pregnant person if there were someone in the subway car dressed as Batman 🧪🦇

I very rarely run pre-written TTRPG adventures but I just finished 4 sessions GMing 'Deluge At Drizzle Distillery' by @munkao.bsky.social and we had an absolute blast. Cannot recommend it more for fun, imagination, or gameability, and the puzzle systems really engage the players' lateral thinking.

If people want to read an actual adaptation of the Frankenstein novel that adds a lot of interesting material while keeping true to the essential themes, scope, and flow of the original you should absolutely read Junji Ito's manga adaptation.

Most people, particularly in Europe, don't imagine #wombats (or any Australian #mammals!) in the snow, so it's cool that the #wombat diorama at @nhmwien.bsky.social depicts a snowy habitat. Snow wombats are common in #Tasmania - like the live one above. #taxidermy

There's a 2007 New Yorker piece on Joel Surnow, "24" (the show he created) & how it popularised the erroneous efficacy of torture. In one bit, after mentioning torture experts warning him about the impact of promoting torture on tv, he goes "They say torture doesn’t work. But I don’t believe that."
This is the perfect encapsulation of the fact that facts are not enough to persuade people.

Really did not like the Del Toro Frankenstein. The novel is too good for me to have any appreciation for a film which is both too reverential to take on its own terms and too full of GDT's personal interjections to work as a straight adaptation of the novel.

Had a dream where I was watching the upcoming Prehistoric Planet season but my brain was just making up new species from Antarctica:Unatus, a flat-faced hominid adapted for marine foraging that was 'the most complete fossil ever found in Antarctica' and Odobenotitan, the largest seal that ever lived

This always felt like a tit-for-tat reaction to censorious wholesomeness merchants. Problem was it didn't really move past viewing artistic taste as a proxy for moral development, and just inverted the conventional associations instead to portray bleak media as more moral (because ++ mature/honest)
I went really hard on the “bad vibes only” thing a couple years ago and in retrospect it was such poser shit. Sure, I like a lot of bleak media, but honestly without some beauty or tenderness or a spark of the sublime, here and then what’s the point? All bummers all the time sucks

Watching Phantom Thread and it is genuinely very funny to set up your film as a Serious Prestige Genre and then have the couple meet by having Vicky Krieps do the 'embarrassed clumsy romance heroine thing' right off the bat as soon within five seconds of being on screen.
