It was in the reign of George II that the above-named personages lived and quarrelled ; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now
If people want to read an actual adaptation of the Frankenstein novel that adds a lot of interesting material while keeping true to the essential themes, scope, and flow of the original you should absolutely read Junji Ito's manga adaptation.

I was trying to find the source of the "The hottest thing a man can do is be fictional" meme and, I swear, the fifth result on Google was the wikipedia page for scaphism

This is an absolutely embarrassing thing for a supposed philologist to come out with. No, 'Woodhouse' is not derived from 'Wood-Wose'. It is derived from the English words 'wood' meaning forest, and 'house' meaning 'house' and is a standard toponym found all over England.

The crucifix toad, Notaden bennetti, named for the black-and red cross pattern on its back, and is noted for its ability to secrete adhesives from their skin.

A long time favourite of mine, the turtle frog (Myobatrachus gouldii). Looks like a piece of uncooked bacon that was granted life by a fairy so it could be friends with everyone in the world.

A silly article that fails to properly engage with systemic issues threatening UK trees and forests: the Sycamore Gap case was fundamentally antisocial and unpredictable, but there's nothing about landowners and business pressures. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Moments in video games that made me cry:
1. The Kid meets Zulf, Bastion
2. Madeline's nightmare about calling her ex, Celeste
3. Breaking the news about the working-class husband's death, Disco Elysium
4. Meeting the Phasmid, Disco Elysium
5. Susie's monologue about the public piano, Deltarune

Like at this point you are REALLY not asking questions about helping men or combating misogyny, you're venting your annoyance that progressive men aren't macho enough for you.

Remembered that awful Christine Emba piece where she intros some macho 'men are protectors' business school influencer by talking about his 'bulging biceps' and then 'cringes in recognition' when he tells her women don't want to sleep sex with men who aren't masculine enough.

Watching ON THE WATERFRONT, and I just cannot understand why Elia Kazan decided to end a highly dramatic and poignant scene by cutting back to Karl Malden dejectedly lighting up the stupidest-looking cigarette known to man

I really liked Adolescence when I watched it but the political media response to it is radicalising me against it - it's a very well-made piece of drama but, quite frankly, it doesn't understand its subject matter on a political level. The idea of showing it in parliament is absurd.

The BBC are listing the Tortoise Investigates podcast on the Tavistock GIDS service as 'True Crime', with the clear implication that the doctors providing gender-affirming care via GIDS were criminals. I've submitted a complaint to the BBC for this disgusting framing.

Ngl if I overheard this I would 100% believe that the frog is bullying the axolotl and using therapy-speak to excuse themselves (I used to do the same thing! it's shit!)

I can at this point safely guarantee that ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL is going to be on my top ten films I've seen this year. Haunting and saddening and enraging, with a huge amount of visual flair.

I've said before that I always repost this when I see it because it's amazing, and it also specifically reminds me of these lines from Wendell Berry's 1967 poem 'Do Not Be Ashamed' (www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazi...).

This is one of those poems where Yeats is putting the whole force of his consideration of his poetic talents towards beautifying his creepy Nice Guy self-adulation. Like even as teenagers this read to us as pretty gross.

Why does everyone know the 'a guy idly chats about swapping murders with someone he doesn't realise is serious' high concept pitch for Strangers on a Train, but no-one ever mentions the absolutely bonkers runaway-merry-go-round fight scene at the end?

I'm fascinated by 'The Things Tak Wrote', the dwarven creation story Terry Pratchett wrote for his book Thud!, because it's an avowed atheist trying to frame a positive view of a divine creator - and the idea he settles on is of a god who is surprised by his creation, and loves it for surprising him

Saw Chapell Roan's SNL outfit in a meme just now and I'm done biting my tongue about the fact that she was clearly cosplaying the Nebra Sky Disc
