This is an absolutely embarrassing thing for a supposed philologist to come out with. No, 'Woodhouse' is not derived from 'Wood-Wose'. It is derived from the English words 'wood' meaning forest, and 'house' meaning 'house' and is a standard toponym found all over England.

A long time favourite of mine, the turtle frog (Myobatrachus gouldii). Looks like a piece of uncooked bacon that was granted life by a fairy so it could be friends with everyone in the world.

I really liked Adolescence when I watched it but the political media response to it is radicalising me against it - it's a very well-made piece of drama but, quite frankly, it doesn't understand its subject matter on a political level. The idea of showing it in parliament is absurd.

The BBC are listing the Tortoise Investigates podcast on the Tavistock GIDS service as 'True Crime', with the clear implication that the doctors providing gender-affirming care via GIDS were criminals. I've submitted a complaint to the BBC for this disgusting framing.

I've said before that I always repost this when I see it because it's amazing, and it also specifically reminds me of these lines from Wendell Berry's 1967 poem 'Do Not Be Ashamed' (www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazi...).

This is one of those poems where Yeats is putting the whole force of his consideration of his poetic talents towards beautifying his creepy Nice Guy self-adulation. Like even as teenagers this read to us as pretty gross.

Why does everyone know the 'a guy idly chats about swapping murders with someone he doesn't realise is serious' high concept pitch for Strangers on a Train, but no-one ever mentions the absolutely bonkers runaway-merry-go-round fight scene at the end?

I'm fascinated by 'The Things Tak Wrote', the dwarven creation story Terry Pratchett wrote for his book Thud!, because it's an avowed atheist trying to frame a positive view of a divine creator - and the idea he settles on is of a god who is surprised by his creation, and loves it for surprising him
