2026 is upon us, #HorrorWritersChat! And it is my privilege to start our new, weekly tradition for this year!

And what better horror to explore, than the horror of the self's transformation... through new beginnings.

Regret manifests by driving the story forward

When you try and get out of regret without working out your own issues, you tend to dig yourself deeper into trouble

Regret

It's faaaaaantastic

Greetings #HorrorWritersChat

I'm Mary, wearing layers in this icy place (Greater Manchester, UK) where I write cosmic, gothic and weird horror.

Regret for things not done...and some actions taken are important concepts in my writing.

But few are looking for redemption. Especially my "villains".
You enter this gnarled gash. The ice emits a susurrus you find familiar – they speak of your life. Of your past. Forever slipping your grasp.

But the ice is also… curious.

Who are you, what do you write, and are regret & redemption important concepts in your horror stories?

#HorrorWritersChat "I raise my sword. If I can't cut it down, then let it be my armor and shield, the thing that drives me."
It towers over you. The blue walls blacken with its shadow. Consequence undulates inside it.

It’s you. The real you. Who you’ve always been.

A thought claws and gnashes into your mind.

“My sins take shape. My sins gain sight. They turn towards me.”

Finish it.

I had to think about that. The characters in my horror fiction, if they do earn some kind of redemption, usually do so through an act of cleansing anger. They mostly overcome their own apathy to destroy themselves or a monster, but the resulting salvation is almost incidental.
#HorrorWritersChat
The walls shimmer reflections of your life. The faces whisper judgement, accusation.

Why. Why were you like this?

Tears freeze on your cheeks. The glacier closes in.

Regret is often paired with redemption. What horrors must your characters face to earn it? *Can* they earn it?

Q1: #HorrorWritersChat

JD Buffington here, author of horror and scifi (and lamenting the state of the world).

I think redemption is a facet of change, so I suppose I’ve written some redemptive storylines, but I definitely weave guilt, regret, and their transformative properties.

Bursting up through the ice and emitting a gaping breath... It is me: Katherine "Kat" Silva, writer of the sad, existential, & horrific.

Regret is a staple in my books. Humans are imperfect. We make mistakes. It's important to show we can recognize and try to atone for them.

I'm Stephanie Ellis, writer of folk horror, gothic, post-apocalyptic and a dash of historical horror.

Both seem to emerge naturally when I write, I think redemption is particularly important because it shows people can change, allows for their acceptance in society.
