“The Shining” Hits Differently For Me As I Age
The first time I read Stephen King’s The Shining, I think I was thirteen or fourteen. And while I was reading at the adult level, I didn’t always understand all the deep stuff that was …

I finished doing the research for a short story earlier than expected. And this story I was researching has a deadline. So, instead of editing something I wrote already, I'll be writing this new one. #WritingCommunity

I was reminded a little while ago that today is the three year anniversary of the passing of Kevin Conroy. If you don't know him, he voiced Batman in a number of TV shows and movies, including Batman: The Animated Series and its spinoffs.

This is the view from my bedroom window this morning. Having an actual autumn for once this year was nice, but it looks like winter has arrived in central Ohio. Here's hoping we survive.

Welcome to Derry episode 3: I enjoyed it. It wasn't as terrifying as the first two episodes, but, like the book, the episode let us spend important time getting to know the characters. Making us care about them and want to see what happens next.

I'm home, the laundry is in the machine, and I'm just catching up on a few things. Not a bad way to finish a wild weekend. How are you this Sunday afternoon?

Last night, I dreamed I was in an Avengers film, and so were a few of my IRL friends. It was nice. I got to meet Hulk and the new Captain America, and then I got to use weird reality-bending powers to cure the dog of one of my IRL friends of a mysterious disease so we could save the world.

Youth is wasted on the young, isn't it?
Me at bar/bat mitzvah parties, aged 12: "What do you mean, the party's over! I could keep dancing till 3 AM!"

Me at bar/bat mitzvah parties, aged 32: "I wish I could stay the last half hour, but I need to take my insulin and get a certain amount of sleep if I'm going to drive home tomorrow."

I arrive at my cousin's bat mitzvah party, and start talking to a different cousin.
Cousin: "So Rami, where are you right now?"
Me: "Here."
Cousin: "In Cleveland? Where?"

How did everyone's goals for this week go? I started and finished editing that short story, and I've had a very good week. So, I would say I've accomplished my goals.

This song goes out to you. To the ones who voted for change this week. Who made their voices heard at the ballot box and pushed back against the guy in the White House. Who will continue to fight till the midterms and even beyond.
You're the voice, and this song is for you.

I persevered and survived this week. I even came out of it with some gains. And now, I'm in Cleveland to celebrate a bat mitzvah and spend time with family. So, to all you wonderful humans, #ShabbatShalom.

Well, I didn't get to watch that second movie, but I did treat myself in all the other ways I meant to. And now that it's late, I think I'll get ready for bed. Good night and pleasant nightmares, everybody.

To my fellow #anime fans (and if you're not one, please feel free to skip): the My Next Life as a Villainess movie is now on Crunchyroll. Apparently they uploaded it there back in May and forgot to tell us.

I will watch a movie tonight. Two, if I can. I may also enjoy a beer. Treat myself. After all, I don't have work tomorrow, and I finished editing that short story last night. And it was a long day. Might as well.
What are you up to this Thursday evening?

Seeing "book-ish gift guides" coming out. You know what makes a good gift for bookish friends? Books. Or bookstore gift certificates. Full stop.

Tell me what books you're reading right now. I'm reading "Gig of the Damned" by Phrique on ebook and listening to "The Shining" by Stephen King on audio.

It looks like it's going to be a long and busy day. But also one with plenty of reasons to smile by the time it's over. Let's hope I'm right.

The traditional religious intent of the kippah, or yarmulka, is to remind oneself that God always reigns above us.

Over time, I think it’s also taken on another significance. A function akin to that of the Chanukah menorah.

It lets the world know, loud and proud, that we are here.
