My mind has been a white-knuckled fist since 2023. The muscles are starting to loosen, but the skin is fit to split. Trying really hard to get these damn books finished.

I love a good werewolf story so you will get plenty of them from me. I also have a few vampire tales up my sleeve. Otherwise, I focus more on the psychological changes that accompany the visible scars, which can of course manifest in a distracted gaze, deep creases in the brow...

You spring out of your den, gliding between trees. You follow the winged figures. Your kin. Your home.

Your past has left its icy trails behind.

Becoming a new self also often includes a physical transformation. Do your characters change physically? In what way?

My characters tend to have mental transformations rather than physical ones, except for the werewolves for obvious reasons.

Well, my asshole MC in SNOW JOB has a physical transformation. He's flattened when his wife tosses his cheating ass into a trash compactor. :)

My characters can sacrifice anything from their very lives, their old life of comfort, or even their humanity. I think within this genre, it’s more often than not extremely significant.

A question blazes in your mind.

Becoming a new self is laden with sacrifices. What do your characters sacrifice? How painful/significant is it?

Knowledge and power take you to a place where innocence is sacrificed.
And that letting go of a past you is very significant and it stings a bit.

My characters sacrifice their innocence. Whether that be in the form of traditional innocence about the world, or their straightforward belief in how the world works, or in human goodness. That loss or corruption is always there as a sacrifice. #HorrorWritersChat

Every story is a bit like the hero's journey: the character sacrifices who they were, because new experiences turn them into someone new. This is horror, so It's usually as painful as giving birth (without an epidural) and can go terribly wrong #HorrorWritersChat

Ooof. Tough question.
It's kind of a mixed bag. Many of my characters go into the final fire willing to sacrifice themselves if it leads to a better future for others. But a common thread is characters having to sacrifice the lies they've told themselves about who they are.

Many times, my characters have to sacrifice what they think is their humanity. You can't always do the right thing in order to survive. Sometimes, you gotta do what's right for you to remain alive. Humanity's complicated. We can't know what's pure when even from rot, sprouts life.

Losing the shackles of society often means living at the edges, or apart from it entirely. That separation is painful but some characters adjust quite well to it, finding peace in their solitude, while others forever feel its loss (and I mean forever, damn immortality can be long)

It's usually their life. Often my horror is that of consequences catching up and only realising too late - sorry or not

In my fantasy, however, I can be more creative. Like the robber sacrificing a finger to trick a reliquary into giving up its treasure, with predictable results

Your voice was much nicer there, ominous furred figures of the #HorrorWritersChat, but alright.

It depends on the story how painful, or complete, but it is a loss of everything they were. Their fear, their anxiety but also their humanity and often their sanity are likely sacrificed for a new self.

#HorrorWritersChat Q3:

It depends on the story, but the most common things my characters sacrifice are innocence and ego.

They either have to accept something about reality or themselves that shatters their worldview, for better or worse.

Sadly, it's not always about squiggly monsters.

The character I mentioned in my last answer, he sacrifices his personal well being to enter a lifestyle which includes great hardship, danger and regular injuries. But he never regrets the choice for a moment; it's all he has left

#HorrorWritersChat It's not much to sacrifice, just a little sanity and the knowledge that people are so stupid that they will have to deal with the same threats repeatedly.

The common sacrifice is the way of life they once knew. Some lost their lives, some their sanity. Others lost friends and family while others lost themselves. Ultimately a price is paid for a fresh start, but you cannot guarantee that start will be the one you desire…

My characters often must risk everything, and while many do pull through, they still lose something of value in the process, often intangible. A sense of security. Self image. All the things that trauma can take away.
