#HorrorWritersChat Question 4: Most commonly by injuries. Sometimes their bodies change. Their souls, very much the same.
You spring out of your den, gliding between trees. You follow the winged figures. Your kin. Your home.

Your past has left its icy trails behind.

Becoming a new self also often includes a physical transformation. Do your characters change physically? In what way?

#HorrorWritersChat Question 3: If we define "sacrifice" as something given up voluntarily, my characters rarely do that. If they did they wouldn't be in the horror story they found themselves in.
The susurrus sharpens into a voice. Your voice. A human rumble deepened by the forest’s savagery bursts from your maw.

A question blazes in your mind.

Becoming a new self is laden with sacrifices. What do your characters sacrifice? How painful/significant is it?

#HorrorWritersChat Question 2: Usually their tolerance for bullshit goes way down.
The figures bury you in frozen earth, in chains of pine needle and bone. Golden eyes fuse into a singular pair.

The soil trembles with a question.

For characters to survive the horrors, they must often become new selves. What kind of new selves do YOUR characters become?

#HorrorWritersChat Question 1: Pen name Victor K. Sanders. I write stories based on old horror movies. And with my wife expecting, I would never want to give up the part of me that already loves my child.
The figures encircle you in ursine and lupine furs. Jagged symbols mark their foreheads under antlered hoods.

The susurrus coalesces into a question.

Tell us who you are, what you write, and what part of your current self would you be scared to give up the most?

#HorrorWritersChat Question 4: With a heavy heart, Noll laid aside the pistol Anya had given him before he left. He didn't need it, there were many ways to take a life. But, he missed the girl.
Q4. Hang around for the outro.

I probably won't forget.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 3: Horror merch. My most beloved material possessions!
Q3, #HorrorWritersChat.

We're inundated with fireworks and a cat who is remarkably unbothered for a change. She's powered by spite today.

Anyway. Questions questions.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 2: Probably the future. The old have way more power in our society, so the most impactful thing I'll ever do is likely ahead of me.
Q2 #HorrorWritersChat.

Who's going to judge YOU?

#HorrorWritersChat Question 1: Pen name Victor K. Sanders. I write horror inspired by old movies. Also, I'll become a parent in May of next year, so if I die I intend to still be there for my child!
Here we go, #HorrorWritersChat!

Q1.

New Year’s Eve is a threshold.
Horror understands thresholds better than hope does - because something always comes through.

#horrorwriting Working on a story I intended for r/NoSleep, but realizing it's probably too slow-burn for that. Now I don't know where to post it!

Was home sick today and tried my first @sainteuphoria.bsky.social movie, The Monster of Phantom Lake! It made my day significantly less miserable!

#HorrorWritersChat Question 4: "My sins take shape. My sins gain sight. They turn towards me. And I turn away."
It towers over you. The blue walls blacken with its shadow. Consequence undulates inside it.

It’s you. The real you. Who you’ve always been.

A thought claws and gnashes into your mind.

“My sins take shape. My sins gain sight. They turn towards me.”

Finish it.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 3: My three primary characters believe that anyone can have redemption if they try to change, that some people are unworthy of redemption, and that redemption is a meaningless concept and people are either dangerous or they aren't. I agree with the last one.
The walls shimmer reflections of your life. The faces whisper judgement, accusation.

Why. Why were you like this?

Tears freeze on your cheeks. The glacier closes in.

Regret is often paired with redemption. What horrors must your characters face to earn it? *Can* they earn it?

#HorrorWritersChat Question: Most of my characters haven't had enough choice in their lives yet to have regrets. The real question is, will they regret the choices they make when they get the chance?
You walk within the glacier, but it feels like you’re sinking. The whispers shiver inside you. Faces are writ on the ice. Of those you’ve disappointed. Hurt.

The glacier is more curious.

How do you depict regret in a character? Does it manifest in environments, buildings, etc.?

#HorrorWritersChat Question One: Penname Victor K Sanders. I write movies inspired by old horror movies. I've actually made differing views on forgiveness a key difference in how my characters view the world.
You enter this gnarled gash. The ice emits a susurrus you find familiar – they speak of your life. Of your past. Forever slipping your grasp.

But the ice is also… curious.

Who are you, what do you write, and are regret & redemption important concepts in your horror stories?

@erynmccee.bsky.social @chaoticauthor.online Yesterday was my birthday, and look what I got! RIP Matt, I hate that I can't tell you what I think. #HorrorWritersChat remembers you.

#WritingCommunity At over 100k words, I finished my first draft yesterday, which was also my birthday. The current ending is terrible, but its such a big win just to have a draft done.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 3: When I was in High School two country songs came out with similar openings. I ended up despising one because every time I heard it's opening I was hoping to hear the other one. I think maybe the good one was "Pickin' Wildflowers" and bad one was "I Love This Bar."
Q3, #HorrorWritersChat.

Us writers are weird creatures. We can't help but shake and quake over a perfect line, but all the senses will get you, if you're open to it.
And music is a story in the ears. Just like a perfume is a story for the nose.
But can you translate it into writing? Do you?
December 11, 2025 at 2:06 PM
#HorrorWritersChat Question 2: Sound is the first warning of the unseen. So, it's very useful in building tension.
Q2.
How do you use sound, music, or the absence of it?
And if we're speaking of the absence of it, Disturbed's Sound of Silence (with Myles Kennedy) is way better than the original of it and you'll just have to accept that.
I will die on this hill!

#HorrorWriting Weird question: Given how far a lot of modern horror goes, do you think there's still a place for horror that never goes to uncomfortable places? I wonder because I draw my inspiration from old movies that seem so tame today?

#WritingCommunity I've now started on the first draft of my final chapter. It feels surreal to see my story starting to come to a close.
