Trish Wilson is all about what scares you. Her short horror stories appear in numerous publications. As the Media Director for The Horror Zine, she has interviewed Ramsey Campbell, Bruce Campbell, Joe Lansdale and more.
Hey, #HorrorWritersChat, thanks for this great chat today. It helped me flesh out my new female vampire character. She's sweet, vulnerable, and deadly. I still don't know her name.

Thanks for a great #HorrorWritersChat, Gree!

Read my Horror Zine interview with John A. Russo, co-writer of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with George Romero. He's co-writing SPAWN OF THE LIVING DEAD with Ani Kyd Wolf. Casper Van Dien is also in the movie.

Fantastic contributions from everybody who joined as always! 💝

On my end, I still have nothing to promote horror-wise, but I AM eagerly awaiting updates from @thatwilliambeck.bsky.social about the coming #HorrorWritersChat anthology 😈

I let go of the dagger without drawing my own blood. The darkness purred and crawled onto my lap. It looked at me with soulful, void-coloured eyes & then licked its paw. The purr lulled me to sleep. As I dozed off, the cat curled up on my chest and walked into my dreams.
Gnarled hands grasp the thrumming earth around you. Void-coloured eyes behold you.

“Embrace me, and my power, you shall have.”

You grasp the dagger in the skull. You do not waver.

“They killed your kindness,” your darkness whispered. “And now, all you have is me.” Continue it.

My vampire becomes despondent if she embraces her dark side so she tries to avoid it, but she isn't always successful. Her dark side is hopelessness and loneliness. Dying doesn't help since she's still alone. She can't risk love. Humans die. Then she's alone again.
All the abuse. All the manipulation. All the tyranny. Blistering scabs on your soul. Your breaths rumble in the mound.

Your eyes lock with the god in front of you.

How changed do your characters become if they embrace their darkest parts? Do things change around them?

I'm working on a new story so I haven't fleshed out my MC much yet. That said, she's a vampire who won't let anyone get too close to her so she doesn't get emotionally attached. But... she needs to eat, so she seduces enough to get fed. She's lonely, which is big problem for her.
You lob the sack onto the slab. The human spills out of it – battered and broken, your dagger lodged in their skull still.

Their face. You remember everything they’ve done.

The eyes glimmer at your contempt.

What are your characters’ darkest parts? Do they embrace them?

Good afternoon, #HorrorWritersChat! I'm Trish Wilson, Media Director for The Horror Zine. I write quiet horror & horror comedy.

The darkest part of myself: I'm Bipolar I. My mind goes to some damned depressing, horrifying, and dark places. I don't like it, but it is what it is.
The mound’s warm innards thrum as you descend. A huge, stone slab is ahead, shining with portent.

Eyes, older than words, behold you from the darkness. A question emerges.

Tell us who you are, what do you write, and what part of yourself do you consider the darkest?

#WriteStuff - My other small New England Town is Norwich. I based it on Lovecraft's Innsmouth.

If Innsmouth were a real town, it would be a 20 minute drive from my house. It faced Plum Island, near Ipswich.

#WriteStuff A5: Caleb's Woe is safe; the type of small town that has a clam bake when it installs a new traffic light. 🤣 While it's safe overall, that vampire MC of mine causes quite the ruckus, and it's not because she's a vamp. It's due to her affair with a married art gallery owner. Gossip!
#WriteStuff Q5: Is there a sense of safety and security in your town? Does the police and fire department provide care for the people who live there? If not, who is looking out for the people in your MC’s town?

#WriteStuff A4: Caleb's Woe leans conservative, but my MC vampire is progressive. She's accepted by the locals. The locals can also be a bit aloof, but once you get to know them, they're delightful. Politics doesn't matter to my characters, but their views drive their motivations.
#WriteStuff Q4: City Hall in your MC’s hometown could also be the courthouse, or the center of corruption. What’s the political view of the town? Does it play into your WIP? Is it a place that matters to your characters?

#WriteStuff A3: Gossip in my vampire story involves a woman (the vampire) having an affair with a married man, but she's really after the man's wife. Things get steamy & odd. Locals hang out at a small breakfast joint to eat eggs, bacon, haddock, and cod - and gossip! This is a horror story.
#WriteStuff Q3: Is there a library, event center, or house of worship in your town where people gather or exchange information? What’s the latest gossip where your MC lives?

#WriteStuff A2: Art. Caleb's Woe is a tourist island no one knows about. 😁 It's New England's best kept secret. Lots of art galleries, quirky locals, small shops, & local seafood. Yum! Everyone knows your name at the restaurants & bars. It's a lovely, haunted place. I based it on my town.
#WriteStuff Q2: What is the main focus of your MC’s town? Is it an industry? A battle between rival companies? Is it the high school football field?

#WriteStuff A1: I set most of my stories in small New England towns since I live in one. This is the type of place that holds a clam bake when a new traffic light is installed. 😸 I created Norwich and the island Caleb's Woe, located in Massachusetts. My vampire story will be set in one of those.

I'm finally scheduled for a hip replacement! I'll be very happy to be able to walk again without pain and without a limp. Once I'm healed, my husband and I will walk on the beaches around here again. I miss the beach. Water is too cold to swim in, but walking is lovely.
Q3: Let's cheer things up a bit! What has brought you joy in the past week? Remember, no joy is too small! #WeeknightWriters
