An experimental finding sure to shock: white evangelicals are especially attuned to slights against Christians, but significantly less likely to view same actions as discriminatory when against a religious out-group. And this double-standard is unique to white evangelicals. doi.org/10.1111/jssr...

Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength
you don't become a martyr because you were a saint, you become a saint because you were martyred
I agree that we can’t make Alex Pretti a Benedictine monk because that’s a trap, but we can talk about the good things we did because people will see and hear them and think “I do those things too”

Running off to work on a story.

In the meantime:

Religious left: still a thing.
Arrests calmly ongoing.

This is going to take a while. There are a lot of clergy risking arrest.

The reality is that 2024 was a fundamental test of the moral character of the nation and we failed spectacularly. We’re living with the consequences now. Maybe we improve. I hope so.

This is a kitchen table issue.
These children should be at kitchen tables, with their families. They should be at lunch tables, with their friends.
Instead they are being kidnapped and trafficked

Excellent @radleybalko.bsky.social piece on why what we are seeing in Minneapolis is, in fact, something qualitatively different than the police violence that happens all too often.

This struck me as a key line: the OPEN contempt for accountability. Such explicitness matters.

This a million times. I wish I could convey the staggering complexity & scale of the work we are doing together here. ICE has effectively limitless resources, and we’re just ordinary people with phones and spreadsheets. And for every neighbor they kidnap, we keep them from kidnapping two more!
The amount of organizing happening in a VERY short period of time is truly mind boggling.

I've seen things come together in hours that, in the nonprofit & education spaces, would take weeks or MONTHS of planning and coordination.

So, so proud of the Twin Cities right now.

How many rural hospitals could we keep open with this money?
How many meals could we get to the hungry?
How many educators could we hire?
How many houses could we build?

These aren't abstract questions, these are real tradeoffs our policymakers are *choosing* to make every time they fund this.
Here is what I would like to see reported - how much is the ICE action in Minnesota costing per day? And I mean total cost - transportation, vehicle rental, hotel, per diem, hazard pay, overtime pay, kristi noem's glam squad giving her hourly lip injections, etc. What is it costing us?

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.
