Someone once called the cops because my abusive ex was beating me THAT badly.

The responding officers recommended I detransition to see if that would make my ex stop. Then they left.
few things will radicalize you like actually calling the cops for help solving a crime and getting a response that’s basically “lmao”
copaganda glosses over the fact that most police departments have awful clearance rates and the ones they do clear are usually shit like “we found the husband standing over his wife’s body holding a gun”

so when their investigative powers are actually in the spotlight they don’t hold up so well

Slightly more than the sticker price of my daughter's birth. United Healthcare paid for some amount of that, I had to pay $6400 out of pocket cuz of the deductible. My wife was billed a similar amount for the same birth.

I guess it makes sense, but they never tell you your baby is its own patient.

We must stop treating doctors like Gods. They’re people - just like the rest of us - and there will be bad eggs (and some VERY bad eggs)

The hierarchal nature of medicine encourages silence. Staff are afraid to speak up.

Patients are the ones who suffer.

Fantastic reporting by ProPublica
Thomas Weiner — the only oncologist in a region of Montana — was a patient favourite and his hospital’s highest earner. As his reputation grew, so did a trail of patient harm and suspicious deaths. Devastating story, meticulously reported by @propublica.org.

I wish those who scream about declining birth rates would understand this.

The U.S. has some of the highest maternal and infant mortality in the developed world. Abortion bans and other reproductive health barriers don’t improve these issues - they drive them.

Women will choose NOT to risk it.

this guy wore a mask and didn't keep his cell phone on him when he fled and as a result a police department that is itself one of the largest armed forces and intelligence agencies on planet earth is completely flummoxed
One of the NYPD brass said “this isn’t blue bloods” when explaining they can’t just immediately find the guy and I like that years of copaganda have set standards cops can’t meet and might be contributing to people’s correct perception that cops don’t effectively stop crime or find killers.

If you haven’t read it yet, Infinite Detail is a story that speaks directly to the era we’re living through - right up to alternative social networks and the emptiness of late-stage capitalism. I can’t recommend it more highly. https://bookshop.org/p/books/infinite-detail-tim-maughan/10353791
Infinite Detail a book by Tim Maughan
A LOCUS AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL!The Guardian's Pick for Best Science Fiction Book of the Year! A timely and uncanny portrait of a world in the wake of fake news, diminished privacy, and a total shutdown of the Internet BEFORE: In Bristol's center lies the Croft, a digital no-man's-land cut off from the surveillance, Big Data dependence, and corporate-sponsored, globally hegemonic aspirations that have overrun the rest of the world. Ten years in, it's become a center of creative counterculture. But it's fraying at the edges, radicalizing from inside. How will it fare when its chief architect, Rushdi Mannan, takes off to meet his boyfriend in New York City--now the apotheosis of the new techno-utopian global metropolis? AFTER: An act of anonymous cyberterrorism has permanently switched off the Internet. Global trade, travel, and communication have collapsed. The luxuries that characterized modern life are scarce. In the Croft, Mary--who has visions of people presumed dead--is sought out by grieving families seeking connections to lost ones. But does Mary have a gift or is she just hustling to stay alive? Like Grids, who runs the Croft's black market like personal turf. Or like Tyrone, who hoards music (culled from cassettes, the only medium to survive the crash) and tattered sneakers like treasure. The world of Infinite Detail is a small step shy of our own: utterly dependent on technology, constantly brokering autonomy and privacy for comfort and convenience. With Infinite Detail, Tim Maughan makes the hitherto-unimaginable come true: the End of the Internet, the End of the World as We Know It.
