As the year draws to a close, I’m signing off 2025 with a magical find!

An ancient amber bear. Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø, Denmark, from a submerged Mesolithic settlement in the North Sea.

✨ Happy New Year all! ✨

Timezones are so weird. Australia is in 2026, Canada is in 2025, and the United States is in 1939.

I’m remembering listening to KUSC on December 31 in 2019… and a guest that the station had flown in, got upset and left mid air of the show

I wish I could find a record recording of it

It is Happening
My twelve-year-old daughter's Christmas haul included a cassette Walkman and a Discman, and music to play on both.

Yes, part of it is STRANGER THINGS. But part of it is the seemingly inevitable swing towards throwback tech, coupled with the current longing to be LEFT ALONE TO LISTEN TO SHIT
I used to think that smartphones and streaming were a mistake because giving people the illusion of access to everything all of the time would break us irreparably, but this & returns to iPods, DVDs, records, etc prove that people just want to be people, not 24/7 consumers and marketing targets.

Making up nearly-correct words is the shared heritage of humankind
Odd spellings often have interesting etymological reasons behind them. But sometimes, what I assume is just one weirdo's odd conception of a word gets immortalized & I like it so much. Like this spelling of 'transporting': "was strancesported" and then "so stransesported" in the line below.

"The botched restoration became first an internet sensation and then a tourist attraction and the church began charging for admission. Ryanair laid on special flights to Zaragoza, the nearest airport, and today thousands of people continue to visit the village to see her work."

Something lovely for the weekend!

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age 💙

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

10/10, no notes.
