Lovely article on University of Cambridge's Future Nostalgia project - rescuing knowledge from old floppy disks! Much of it resonates with the preservation work we do at GTW:

A digital dark age? The people rescuing forgotten knowledge trapped on old floppy disks
From lectures by Stephen Hawking to the letters of British politician Neil Kinnock – it's a race against time to save the historical treasures locked away on old floppy disks.

Fuck me this is bleak.
But please, do continue to use GenAI slop thumbnails for your YouTube videos, or your album art, or your book covers or whatever else. I'll continue to refuse to watch/listen/read any of them, knowing already they're not worth the time & that you're a disappointing lazy hack.

The Gosh Wonderful ZX Spectrum ROM V1.40 is available for download along with a useful BASIC program “peeker” that I use to peek under the hood. It uses 3 routines by Steve Vickers written for other Z80 computers back in the 80s.
They achieve total accuracy.

My spinny table isn't big enough so this will have to do.

I'm really happy with the fake CRT look for the most part. There's a lens geometry issue that shows at extreme angles but I think I know how to fix it.

That'll be for the next build. 🙂

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Microsoft can FOAD. Pulling budgets from studios such as Romero Games, Rare etc. to plough into the AI bubble is abhorrent to me, and this ex-360 gamer will never darken their metaphorical doors with my own money again.

Long shot, but I don't suppose anyone has an IBM Model M they would be willing to part with?

Don't fancy risking a random one on ebay.

Ideally within the UK to avoid shipping and things.

I think LLMs are appealing to a certain set of people who think they're entitled to be good at something without wanting to actually put in any work

mostly, it seems people who think the disciplines of the Humanites aren't "real" and so just any rube can do it. Chris Arnade, basically

Well it seems to be going okay so far provided it doesn't self destruct. 🤞

It took some patching up and the backight is a little lower than it should be, it was that or stretch the ribbon cables.

I'll run it for a bit, then think about making the shell a little nicer. 🙂
