NEW BLOG POST!

This time I'm talking about systems-driven narrative design and how YOU can tell a story with your gameplay, whatever that gameplay happens to be. We start from Bananza and build into a systemic approach anyone can use.

Systemic Narrative: A How-To Guide
After my last blog post on Donkey Kong Bananza, I threatened to take what I’d learned and tell you how to do that for yourself. Well here I am, looming in the shadows with the knife of knowledge in my hand. Waiting just for you.Now you may look at this blog title and think to yourself “But Nathan, Bananza doesn’t really have a systems-driven narrative, why are you talking about that topic?!” and to you I would say “welcome to my unhinged corner of the internet, you must be new here!”. I have always and will always be of the opinion that old games did get it right in that in-game tutorials were minimal.

That should continue. We just also need to replace the instruction manual.

Cause old games were also unclear as hell just like constantly.
I'm older than you so I can confirm that they came with a little book that had the tutorial in it and you read it on the way home

I am deeply curious about what one does with dynamic terrain destruction in a Diablo.

Raise your hand if you were a Millennial labelled "gifted" by your school and their "answer" to that was to occasionally take you out of class to do these in the cafeteria.

Absolute all-timer for me! I have been thinking about Avowed nearly every single day since I beat it, if you haven't given it a chance yet DO YOURSELF A FAVOR.
This is how we forge our destiny. Avowed is now available on PlayStation 5 globally. bit.ly/4sykDoi

I have a very simple and straightforward two-step plan to Save The Video Game Industry:

Step 1: Globally eliminate the concept of a classed society and redistribute all surplus resources among the populace, permanently enshrining social ownership of the means of production.

Step 2: Ridge Racer 8.

You ever have that moment where you're watching someone treat you the way you want to learn to treat others?

Like suddenly, bam! Role model!

I had an interview today like that. No idea I was searching for new interview techniques, but I absolutely found them.

“What if I build a cabin and then the timber company decides to stop renewing our leases?”

“They wouldn’t do that.”

“But we only have 10-year leases with no guarantee that we can renew …”

“There’d be too many FIRES.”

Those who have ears, let them hear.

Including disabled people in our utopian futures pushes back against a eugenicist ideal.
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

there is no shame in a defeat well earned. there is GREAT shame in caring more about avoiding the appearance of being defeated, than about trying to make the world right.
