I respect Anil so I want to talk seriously about harm reduction and public health messaging.

First let me acknowledge that yes, many regular, not-super-online people are trying out AI tools. Of course they are! It's been aggressively pushed into everything and given heavy institutional support.
this is the really ineffective head-in-the-sand reaction a lot of folks on Bluesky tend to have if you talk about any harm reduction-based approach to the reality that millions of people are using AI tools today. The current approach to critiquing AI is obviously not working, but they don't care.

Sorrow Home by Margaret Walker

My roots are deep in southern life; deeper than John Brown or Nat Turner or Robert Lee. I was sired and weaned in a tropical world. The palm tree and banana leaf, mango and coconut, breadfruit and rubber trees know me.

Just to give people a sense of the significance of this:

There are two types of pump threads in the US right now, basically: Spectra and Medela.

If you buy a pump, you will almost certainly be pumping INTO a Spectra or Medela-threaded bottle.

And one of these companies is pulling THIS toxic shit
This is vile. Medela pumps are the most commonly used hospital grade pumps in NICUs & postpartum units. You can support breastfeeding without discontinuing products for parents who exclusively pump, bottle feed, or have to send their child to daycare with bottles so they can return to work.

Yesterday was a hard, hard political day as we saw the advance of this white supremacist eugenic project. I have no joy for cheering my country today, but unwavering solidarity w its people thrust senselessly in harm’s way. Truth. Empathy. Trust. These I hold to & extend 🇺🇸 We can do better together

First poem that stuck as a child: Christina Georgina Rossetti’s Hurt No Living Thing.

Hurt no living thing:
Ladybird, nor butterfly,
Nor moth with dusty wing,
Nor cricket chirping cheerily,
Nor grasshopper so light of leap,
Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat,
Nor harmless worms that creep.

The idea that there will be One Big Event that changes everything is much easier than the idea that you have to go out of your house, work with other people, find consensus, organize, risk arrest, have passion and patience, and listen to women and Black people.

covid threw into high relief how many working class people are absolutely necessary to keeping society functional, and rather than that sparking a renewed commitment to an economy that rewards such workers, we've seen an elite backlash against even modest increases in their market power

AOC: We must acknowledge the terrifying moment we are in right now. What we are hearing and seeing with our own eyes is, in fact, happening. We are watching our neighbors, students, and friends being fired, targeted, and disappeared. It is real.

Perioidic reminder that the reason you didn't see autistic people with intellectual disabilities on the street five decades ago was not because they didn't exist. It's because they were sent away to institutions and their parents were told to put away pictures of them.

Be an effing dandelion.
'Dandelions,' was painted by the Danish artist Bertha Wegmann around 1910. It wasn't an arbitrary choice of a plant to paint: the dandelion was used to promote the women’s liberation movement in Scandinavia because of its capacity for uncontrolled, strong-willed growth.

The missing history to this is that the suffragettes’ gains of the 1920s & ‘30s - as female college graduates w/ professional careers & mutuality in their relationships w/ men - vanished by the 1950s as girls were led to idealize teen marriage and motherhood as their sole purpose.

A single decade.
Imagine being a teenage girl now. Your male peers are all watching Andrew Tate and doing Nazi salutes and every week the most prestigious magazines in the world run a piece about how it’s a social emergency that you’re not having babies in the 10th grade.

“I understand the exhaustion, anger, …[overwhelm] and the grief that those of us who believe in democracy, equality and justice are experiencing right now. And painful as it is,… there are no guarantees that we can overcome all that we are facing. But… unless we fight, we cannot prevail.”

All this administration does is put every single nonprofit and institution into a trolley problem of either sacrificing trans people or hurting everyone else by eliminating federal funding.

It won't end with us. They'll do this with every minority until it's only white men who are left.
