In two separate forms, the Murderbot series has emerged as a key text of contemporary SFF. Here's Amritesh on the impacts of adaptation on its effects: "The book makes you feel like Murderbot, simultaneously overstimulated and understimulated. The show makes you see what it’s like to be around it."
Murderbot Season One
Murderbot has no interest in saving you. It has a job to tolerate and approximately zero patience for human interaction. What it does have is an encyclopedic knowledge of soap operas and the abilit…

Mild spoilers for this week's episode of Starfleet Academy:
If your complaint is "But the Klingons playing along with a pretend war in order to keep their honor would be ridiculous," you may have failed to notice that *everything* about Klingon culture is ridiculous.

Curiously, "bot" may be the only standard computing term with Slavic etymology. Bot comes from robot, a word invented by Karel Čapek. In Czech it's obviously derived from "robota" (work); the root "rob" coming from Proto-Slavic *orbъ (with metathesis); -ota being a deadjectival suffix (verb->noun).

Definitely not the first one; the most obvious example is Antaak in Enterprise as a Klingon with blonde hair, but even before that, e.g. Gorkon in Star Trek VI is not any darker skinned than Kirk when we see him in a properly lit set.

a/t Ilhan Omar's attacker: just imagine having "Kaźmierczak" as your last name and saying some shit about descendants of slaves

(this is a non-noble Polish last name, so there is only a very little chance the ancestors of this guy weren't serfs with no rights to leave their masters' land)

I found a niche Polish collection of 256 poems by Whitman at a library here but it's not there; trying to get a copy of a collection of 400 Whitman poems but currently nearest available copy is in Kraków, welp.

More adventures in translating prose that quotes poetry: there's a poem by Whitman quoted in a book I'm translating, unfortunately not all of Whitman is translated and/or widely published in Polish.

And American authors love to quote Whitman.
Sigh, again I'm translating a book with a poem quoted in it and turns out the poem probably has not been translated to Polish yet. (The proper etiquette is to quote an existing translation if one exists, generally).

I'm generally not a poetry translator, welp.

I know that the US treatment of Canada has been lore in the Fallout universe from the very beginning of the very first game.

But it still feels very topical to see a Canada-US border with "The Big 51" painted over it in the closing credits.

It's a poem by Rilke, and I thought at first "that's fine, all of Rilke's poems must be translated to Polish by now, right?"

Well... Turns out all of the ones he wrote in German are, but this is one of the ones Rilke wrote in French.
