If ICE were a legitimate immigration-law enforcement agency, there would be no reason for its agents to be armed.

‘Illegal’ immigration is a sin of bureaucratic omission—a lack of paperwork, a failure to go through proper channels. It is not violent and should not be met with violence.

I suppose mine’s the Sackville, but my lifestyle is such that I don’t see it as often as I see the Don,* or the St. Lawrence. But really, the Shubenacadie Canal is more like a home river to me than any actual river is these days.

*The Torontonian one, not the Russian one (or any of the others).
My favorite Twitter prompt was "RT this with your home river," so reskeet this with your home river.

Mine is the Patuxent.

@erikas.online’s thread reminds me of these two photos I took last August of the same deer in the same spot from two different angles.

Hello academics! If you sent anything to anyone after, say, the 15th of December, I can promise you that it is too early to expect them to have moved on it! You can leave your follow up emails another week or three, I promise.

The superstitious part of my brain says that Trump’s attacks on Venezuela were brought on by all those people saying they wished they could live in precedented times for a change.
Fuck the Monroe Doctrine.
Fuck the Roosevelt Corollary.
Fuck American exceptionalism.
Fuck those fucking cowards in Congress who failed to impeach Reagan for Grenada, Bush père for Panama, and Bush fils for Iraq.

The last time I took a photo of a car for aesthetic reasons was in 2010, near the Escher museum in the Hague. I was going to upload it, but I don’t know enough about cars to write useful alt text. Then I remembered I’ve photographed cars more recently to gripe about them being parked in bike lanes.
'What's the last car you stopped to take a photo of?'

Am I doing this right?

“The rickshaw-voilà pumped water through the pipes to flesh out the debris.”

#context
We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps:

- It’s ‘voilà,’ not ‘wallah!’
- It’s ‘a lot,’ not ‘alot.’
- It’s ‘further ado,’ not ‘farther adieu.’
- It’s ‘flesh out,’ not ‘flush out.’
- It’s ‘sneak peek,’ not ‘sneak peak.’

No worries if not!!!

Oh, I say! I’ve rather lucked out here. I’m a member of the idle rich who might occasionally dabble in journalism or win a few quid in a darts tournament, but who has no need to actually earn a living. I spend much of my time as a houseguest in stately manors, inexpertly aiding my friends and aunts.

This is true. At best, you can come up with food-names that are too long for casual everyday use (such as “Ris de veau à la financière”), but that just opens up a wealth of potential nicknames (Riri, Fifi, Nancy, Veaubot, etc.), and the full version is ideally suited for admonitory purposes.
You really can't name a single food that wouldn't also be a good name for a cat.

This is unfortunate news for anyone who expects to (still) be teaching phonology when the cohort in question reaches university age.
Kinda interesting: so I have talked to several kids under 12 from different parts of the US, and none of them were familiar with Pig-Latin. Which is a bit of a bummer since there's evidence it goes back to the 16th century or earlier. In general, there's almost no "kid-cant" familiarity.

For the most part, I don’t really get Christianity. But there is much worth contemplating in the story of the Nativity, and in the image of a newborn baby representing all the hopes of the world.

Merry Christmas.

Any Canadian effort to make American media look silly would be entirely redundant.
The Atlantic suggesting, without evidence, that Canada's Global TV broadcasting the '60 Minutes' segment on CECOT that CBS distributed to it may have been an act of "treachery."
